Job description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated MR clinical scientist to join the MR Physics Group at The Christie. This role is suitable for an experienced MR clinical scientist who is looking to develop their role within the field of clinical MR physics. Candidates with more limited experience may be considered for appointment at a lower band initially.

The MR Physics Group is part of the Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection Group and comprises a team of eleven MR clinical scientists and physicists who support approximately 40 MR systems across 22 MR departments, at sites across the North West of England. We provide an integrated support role across the departments we work with, working closely with clinical colleagues to optimise imaging and to improve and develop services. Other core elements of the role include acting as MRSE, equipment testing and teaching. Each group member leads on support to 2-3 Trusts within the region, taking responsibility for the scientific and safety support provided.

We also have an expanding research role at The Christie and actively contribute to CRUK and BRC funded research projects, with strong collaborations with the Radiotherapy Related Research department at the University of Manchester.

For a further information or an informal of the role, please contact Mike Hutton (MR Physics Group lead) by email ([email protected]) or telephone (07940715993).

The main duties of the job include:

  • Lead in providing MRSE support to 2-3 NHS Trusts with North West of England region
  • Lead on provision of clinical and scientific support to 2-3 NHS trusts in the North West of England region
  • Contribute to research and development activities of the MR Physics Group
  • Contribute to the teaching and education role of the MR Physics Group, which includes postgraduate and FRCR programmes and developing novel teaching material using an MR simulator in collaboration with the North West imaging Academy
  • Perform equipment and installation testing and audits
You should have proven experience in MR physics and hold a post-graduate qualification in medical physics. The MR Group act as MRSE across a range of clinical MR services and IPEM MRSE certification (or actively working towards this) is essential. We work closely with other health professionals and clinicians to improve the safety and quality of MR clinical services, so excellent communication skills are a must. Travel to NHS trusts within the North West Imaging Networks on a regular basis is a requirement of the role, but your work will be focused on only 2-3 NHS Trusts. The ability to deliver service improvements and innovative solutions is essential.

We strongly encourage career development and support to undertake the HSST scheme is possible for the right candidate.

The range of clinical MR specialisms that we work across (e.g. MR for radiotherapy, cardiac and neuro-imaging specialisms) make the work extremely varied and interesting. We often work independently, but are fortunate to have a large, experienced group with strong links to academia. We communicate regularly as a group to share knowledge and good practice. Our work provides opportunities to undertake research and service development

Manchester is a hub for sport, music and culture as well as a friendly, vibrant city.
