Are you passionate about bringing positive change to the lives of Children and Young People with Autism and/or Learning Disabilities? Do you have experience working with Children and Young People with complex behavioural needs? Then the Intensive Support Function (ISF) Principle Clinical Psychologist post would enable you to utilise your skillset in a fulfilling and impactful way.

The Intensive Support Function is a multiagency team that covers the whole Cheshire, working alongside agencies and stakeholders to prevent hospital admission and placement breakdown, by providing intensive support in the community. This support incudes comprehensive assessment, intervention and multiagency liaison.

You would be joining a developing Team consisting of Specialist practitioner/ Mental Health Nurse /Positive Support behaviour practitioner/ Associate Practitioners /Clinical Support Workers, Assistant Psychologist. The post does require the ability to travel in a timely manner across the Cheshire area as needed.

The team use the PBS model and experience in this would be helpful.

The post will be considered as Full time or Part time.

Main duties of the job

To work within Intensive Support Function to provide highly specialist clinical psychology input to children and young people (CYP) with a Learning Disability and/or Autism and significant challenging behaviour/mental health difficulties, and their families and carers. As part of this role, the post holder will deliver the Intensive Support Function, which aims to prevent inappropriate inpatient admissions/out of area placements thereby enabling this cohort of CYP to remain in the community.

The Principal Clinical Psychologist role will provide a specialist and intensive psychological assessment, support and therapeutic intervention to facilitate positive change for the CYP and their families referred and the network around them. The Principal Clinical Psychologist will be expected to provide consultation to team members and the network around the CYP; offering advice, training and support to non-psychologist colleagues on the CYP’s psychological and mental health needs, as well as to support colleagues to develop their reflective practice and case formulation skills.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Doctoral-level qualification in Clinical Psychology or it’s HPCaccredited equivalent
  • HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist
Desirable criteria
  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff education and training, and/or other fields of applied psychology
  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.

Knowledge and Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Extensive highly specialised knowledge and expertise in working with children/young people with learning disabilities and/or autism: behaviours that challenge, appropriate psychotherapeutic interventions
  • Evidence of training or supervision of other psychologists.
  • High level ability to communicate effectively at both written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to children and young people, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in highly emotive situations
  • Highly developed knowledge of theory and practice of highly specialise psychological therapies with specific reference to children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the Health Professions Council and the British Psychological Society.
  • Extensive specialist knowledge of the Mental Capacity and Mental Health Act
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to children and young people and mental health.
  • Knowledge and skills in neuropsychological assessment and intervention with children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism.
  • Knowledge of theory and practice of psychological interventions in specific cohorts (e.g. children and young people with autism and co-morbid issues)
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts
  • Experience of service users and carer involvement in services.
  • Experience of assessment and intervention with children/young people with learning disabilities and/or autism
  • Experience of working alongside Tier 4 services.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience of working as a qualified Clinical Psychologist within the designated specialty of learning disabilities and autism.
  • Experience of working across a multi-disciplinary professional network
  • Experience of exercising autonomous clinical responsibility for children/young peoples’ psychological care and development of behaviour management plans within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan
  • Experience of teaching, training and / or professional clinical supervision.
  • Experience of multiprofessional leadership of teams or services within the designated specialty
  • Experience of psychological practice in managing mental health problems and behaviours that challenge
