Location: London, GB

Company: Civil Aviation Authority

Salary: £45,000 up to £50,000 (dependent upon experience)

Contract Type: Permanent – Full time

We are the UK's aviation regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

The Consumers and Markets Group (CMG) ensures the aviation market works to protect and benefit air passengers, regulating airports and air traffic services, airlines and air holiday companies. The CMG Analysis & Insights team produces evidence-based research to aid decision making in CMG and across the CAA, in addition to external partners.

The purpose of the role is to lead analytical projects and investigations by pro-actively supporting internal and external stakeholder needs for reliable industry intelligence. This will include identifying, actioning, and delivering novel analysis within CMG and across the CAA, in addition to trusted external partners. The role requires influencing leadership within CMG and the wider CAA towards successful outcomes by offering analytical expertise to some of the highest profile and pressing issues affecting the industry today.

This role also focuses on delivering industry data and intelligence to be disseminated to the wider public in line with the CAA’s statutory duties. The Principal, Analysis and Insights will act as a focal point for analytical best practice in the team and more broadly across CMG and the CAA.

Core Accountabilities

  • Deliver clear, data-driven insight to the wider business and external partners. Convert complex analytical outputs into meaningful, actionable intelligence.
  • Support the ongoing monitoring of the aviation industry and wider economic environment, identify key trends and anomalies and act upon them appropriately if needed.
  • Support and influence colleagues by offering compelling and thought-provoking analysis which builds upon their existing knowledge and improves decision making. Develop strong relationships with stakeholders that increases the impact and demand for the Analysis & Insights (A&I) teams’ outputs.
  • Able to clearly explain complex numerical outputs to colleagues, present findings or contribute meaningfully in internal and external discussions. Deputise for the Head of A&I when required.
  • Proactively identify and incorporate new data sources or analysis/work programmes, encompassing some of the most pressing issues affecting the aviation industry today. Manage the implementation, identify key stakeholders or benefactors and bring the project to a suitable completion.
  • Lead junior analysts in the fulfilment of analytical tasks, requests, and their ongoing development where appropriate. Act as a coach to others to improve analytical skills across the organisation.
  • Maintain a good knowledge of industry and broader economic developments, to be able to engage effectively across the broad range of topics that the team contribute to.

About You

  • A curious, detail-orientated, free-thinker with a natural affinity for data and what insights can offer. The ability to proactively identify key industry issues or trends in data that may affect the organisation and act upon them is vital.
  • Highly numerate and analytical; ideally educated to a degree level in a numerate discipline or have experience of working in a similar insight delivery role.
  • Experience of working with large, complex datasets and applying advanced analytical techniques to cleanse, summarise and visualise the data - creating understandable and actionable metrics and insights.
  • The candidate should be comfortable communicating with and influencing senior stakeholders or subject matter experts using their own novel analysis. Proven presentation and effective communication skills would be beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Excel (inc. PowerQuery/PowerPivot) or common database languages (e.g. SQL) is necessary, whilst experience or exposure to data analysis tools/languages would be advantageous (e.g. Alteryx, VBA, Python and R).
  • Experience of data visualisation tools such as PowerBi or Tableau would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge or experience of data engineering or data warehousing would be beneficial.
  • A good understanding or interest in economics and economic theory would be favourable.
  • Prior experience/knowledge of working within in the aviation industry or passion for aviation would be beneficial.

What Can We Offer You?

The opportunity to provide insight and evidence to direct some of the most high profile issues affecting the aviation industry today. We’re a small but dynamic and effective team which partners with areas across the CAA and externally.
