About the Role
To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team. The role will include all tasks normally undertaken by an experienced nurse and in addition any roles agreed between the nurse and the doctors as appropriate, having regard to current training.
Monitor and assist with the management of long term conditions, health promotion, prevention and screening to be supported by the PN Team leader and to work within scope of own competencies.
1. General Nursing Services To carry out general treatment room duties, and to provide nursing care/treatment to patients, to include:
- Wound Care
- ECG
- BP and urine checks
- Removal of sutures/clips
- Ear syringing
- Height/weight checks and dietary advice
- Chaperoning
- New Patient Medicals as required
- Contraceptive pill checks and depo provera
- To assist in the provision of care to patients with chronic disease in accordance with QOF and agreed practice protocols: screening of high risk groups and follow up care of known sufferers, including call/recall of patients. To provide advice and refer on when necessary.
- Special interests in Diabetes/COPD/Asthma.
3. Health Promotion
- To provide health education and advice to patients.
- To undertake screening of new patients in accordance with Practice protocol and give advice when necessary.
- To provide smoking cessation advice level 2
4. Injections and Immunisations
- Routine and preventative injections, in accordance with the National Childhood Immunisation Programme, national campaigns eg flu and travel vaccinations according to practice protocols.
- Administration of injections and implants eg Zoladex.
- Advise patients on general health care and minor ailments or accidents.
- Setting up of instruments for and assisting GPs with minor surgery and contraceptive techniques such as IUCDs and implants (Implanon).
- To ensure that procedures to ensure infection control are carried out.
- To take cervical smears in connection with the routine screening programme.
- To maintain supplies and equipment in the treatment rooms and clinic nurse room and to ensure that these areas comply with Health & Safety requirements, and to maintain general tidiness clinical areas.
- To ensure clinical waste is safely and appropriately disposed in accordance with Regulations.
11. To advise where appropriate with summarising of patient medical records.
12. To maintain professional development by attending courses and study days as agreed with the employer to maintain professional registration and a high standard of skills and to take part in the programme of clinical meetings held within the practice.
13. To maintain NMC standards of accountability and confidentiality at all times.
14. To support the Team Leaders to ensure coverage of rotas and all nursing duties during absences for sickness and annual leave.
15. To attend and participate in any practice/nursing meetings when required.
16. Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post.

- Registered General Nurse Qualifications/Certificates
- Recognised qualification to diploma level or above
- A demonstrable commitment to professional development
- Competent in basic nursing duties required for the post
- Specific nursing skills / qualifications in Diabetes/Asthma
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience of working in accordance with the UKCC Code of Professional Conduct and The Scope of Professional Practice
