Job description
The Senior Manager, Public Relations is responsible for securing earned media that communicates the Hammer Museum's mission, maintains and enhances the Museum's identity, and expresses its position as a dynamic cultural institution. The Senior Manager, Public Relations plays a crucial role in bolstering the museums reputation locally and worldwide by securing media coverage for major institutional priorities including the acclaimed Made in L.A. biennial, important retrospectives and thematic exhibitions, and the Hammer's many public programs on topics including art, film, literature, politics and current events, and more.
The Senior Manager, Public Relations proactively pitches media opportunities as well as manages all incoming/reactive press inquiries. The Senior Manager develops and executes media strategy for the museum, including writing and shaping press releases, devising unique story pitches to editors and writers, and overseeing press events at the museum. The Senior Manager secures placement of feature articles, reviews, listings and profiles in national and local media outlets promoting museum exhibitions, programs, and other institutional priorities. This position cultivates active relationships with writers, editors, and photographers; organizes visits to the museum for film or photo shoots, press previews, and other events; and maintains press lists for outreach to media outlets and journalists.

Required/Preferred
Excellent communication skills to interact and effectively deal with members of the press, Museum staff/partners, trustees, corporate heads, University officials, and diverse individuals at the university, city, state and international levels
Required
Four years of experience working in a public relations, journalism, media, or a related field. Museum, arts, culture, or university environment (preferred)
Required
In depth knowledge of and relationships with Los Angeles and national arts media
Required
Deep familiarity with traditional, digital and social media news and media outlets with an emphasis on those that appeal to key Hammer audiences and stakeholders and feature regional, arts, culture, social justice, and other relevant content; monitor trends and journalist interest to ensure broad and timely outreach
Required
Ability to discretely and tactfully deal with sensitive and confidential information
Required
Exceptional skills in writing, editing, and proofreading press releases, correspondence and other documents using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation

Strong communication skills to express the mission of the Museum. Ability to make oral one on one and group presentations to provide information

Outstanding attention to directions, details, and follow-up; ability to interpret instructions and communicate expectations and requirements to multiple stakeholders

Ability to prioritize and adjust workload, manage a variety of tasks, and meet various deadlines in keeping with institutional priorities

Knowledge of proper channels to source information and required approvals; judiciously decide what information should be shared and how to position it appropriately

Familiarity with contemporary art/artists, museums, art galleries, or related humanities field. Emphasis on LA based artists a plus.

Proven skill and experience using a PC and Microsoft Office Suite to execute daily tasks, and effectively communicate

Proficiency in digital and traditional image management, ability to learn and properly utilize Adobe Photoshop and digital asset management system (NetX)

Physical abilities to perform all core functions and duties including but not limited to the ability to talk; hear; see; manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard for long periods; visual acuity to view a computer monitor for long periods
