Portfolio Modelling Director

The Portfolio Modelling group is a newly created team within the broader Portfolio Analytics organisation. The remit of the group is to act as a single point of accountability for the design and delivery of modelling owned by Strategy and Portfolio. Specifically covering questions involving the total pipeline or special projects working in partnership with the Strategy team. The group works in partnership with the Competitive Intelligence and Pipeline Reporting teams to ensure holistic and consistent responses to pipeline level questions. The work that this team does will directly impact decision making at the most senior level within R&D; affect the organisational strategy and priorities; as well as supporting robust decision making on the progression of specific assets.

This group is differentiated from the other Portfolio Analytics teams by being experts in the design and deployment of portfolio analytical/statistical models. The team acts as change agents in shifting our ways of analysing the portfolio. When appropriate, the group will work hand in hand with the Data Science group to ensure that these analyses are deployed in sustainable ways.

The newly formed Modelling group will own the following example tasks:

  • Lead the analytical work to assess R&D’s pipeline sustainability through our organisational Fill and Flow program.

  • Modelling the mid to long range projections of the R&D pipeline value and the uncertainty that surrounds this.

  • Identifying and tracking the key future inflection points for the R&D portfolio to help drive organisational focus.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Set a compelling vision for the Portfolio Modelling team.

  • Contract with stakeholders across Strategy and Portfolio to ensure the right body of work for the Portfolio Modelling group and work with senior leaders to prioritise and resource accordingly.

  • Support the team as an expert in designing portfolio modelling solutions.

  • Effectively manage the team of portfolio professionals to deliver against prioritised activities.

  • Directly deliver ad-hoc analytics projects that span multiple use cases or exploratory analyses that are built on potentially large data sets.

  • Act as a member of the Portfolio Analytics LT.

  • Lead the engagement with the Portfolio Data Science group to ensure that sustainable technology solutions for portfolio models are created to continuously improve ways of working for the group.

  • Proactively ensure consistent methodologies across use cases and R&D organisations.

  • Build and maintain relationships across R&D and broader GSK, including R&D Finance, Corporate Finance and Biostatistics.

  • Keep up to date with, and contribute to, external literature on quantitative portfolio analysis methodologies.

  • Represent the group in discussions with senior leadership up to and including the Chief Scientific Officer and the R&D Leadership Team.
