Here at Associated British Ports we are currently recruiting for a Port Operative to join the Operations team at our Teignmouth port. We are looking for an enthusiastic and flexible individual with a “can do” attitude, to join our team, working outdoors, in a dynamic and interesting environment.
As a Port Operative, you will primarily be involved with the discharge and loading of vessels (ships, lorries and/or trains) using a variety of plant and equipment, in a proactive and safe way.
Previous experience of working in a port environment is not necessary and we welcome applications from people from all career backgrounds. Experience of operating all heavy plant and/or forklift trucks is desirable, although not essential. ABP has a training academy to help you develop new skills and progress your career.

What you’ll be doing…
- Operating heavy plant and machinery – such as Front Loading Shovel, Forklift Truck, Skidsteer, Mobile Lifting Platform, Mobile Material Handling Cranes, Tugmaster and bagging equipment – to achieve the safe and efficient handling of cargo in storage areas, warehouses and on vessels
- Physically prepare and move cargo and assist in the preparation of stores.
- Comply with and assist in the development of Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work and ensure that all duties are undertaken in accordance with ABP’s safety policies and procedures.
- Work with IT systems and internal and external software packages.
- General housekeeping and maintenance duties to ensure efficient port operations.
- Undertake duties to aid compliance with licences for cargo handling.
- Travel and provide operational support at our Port of Plymouth to undertake activates such as mooring/unmooring operations and to supervise traffic on and off the ferries.
What you’ll need...

- Be physically fit and be able to carry out manual tasks.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work as a team.
- Flexibility to work weekends and beyond the shift if the discharging/loading is close to finish.
- Full UK driving licence.
Ideally, you’ll also have…
- Ability to operate heavy plant and machinery including but not limited to loading shovel, tug-master, forklift trucks.
- Previous experience of working in a port or other similar marine / operational environment.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £24,800.00-£27,900.00 per year
