Association of British Insurers
Full Time London, England 35000 - 55000 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

When meeting us, you’ll quickly discover that the best thing about the ABI is the people. We’re hugely proud that 99% of our people think individual differences are respected and we feel empowered to bring our whole self to work without fear of judgment and embrace all our differences as every voice matters. If that sounds like your kind of culture, read on to find out how you can join us.

We are open to flexible, part time and/or job share working – please let us know if this would be your preference. We’re currently working in a hybrid way with at least 40% of time in the office.

We’re looking for a Senior or Policy Adviser, European & International Affairs (depending on experience) to contribute to the development and implementation of the ABI’s international trade policy. You’ll work with our EU and international network to identify issues to lobby the UK Government on, and engage with our counterpart associations around the world. In addition to policy development, you’ll champion the UK insurance and long-term savings sector with a particular focus on the Specialty and Wholesale Market.

Please note this is a 12-month fixed term contract maternity cover role.

We welcome people who are new to insurance (most of us were when we joined!) – as well as those with experience.

What’s the job?

  • Implement the ABI’s international trade policy by identifying market access issues and opportunities in our priority markets.
  • Lobby the Government in shaping their trade strategy, particularly on our priority markets for trade.
  • Monitor regulatory developments impacting foreign (re)insurers in our priority markets – including in India and US.
  • Coordinate member views with Government officials ahead of negotiating rounds for trade agreements and official Dialogues.
  • Engage with and influence the work of TheCityUK, CBI, Corporation of London and GFIA.
  • Brief the Chair of the ABI ahead of TCUK International Trade and Investment Group meetings.
  • Represent the ABI at Department for Business and Trade (DBT) trade advisory meetings.
  • Raise the profile of the UK insurance and long-term savings sector with our overseas network

What skills do you need?

  • Policy knowledge – you can get up to speed with the technical detail and analyse complex policy issues, identifying and managing policy risks.
  • Excellent relationship management skills – you’re an empathetic, confident communicator who can build rapport with a wide variety of stakeholders and represent the ABI’s position.
  • Lobbying skills – you know how to lobby and can influence and persuade government officials and policy makers.
  • Communication – as well as working effectively with your stakeholders, your written communication is concise, and you can produce tailored briefings for senior colleagues.

Throughout the interview and assessment process, we will be looking for you to demonstrate the ABI’s values; We are Brave; We take Ownership; We are Appreciative; We are Human and We are Curious.

Inclusion matters to us:

We welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds and we run our application process a bit differently – we don’t assess based on CV or past experience. We’ll ask application questions which are relevant to the role and the skills we need to ensure our process is fair, inclusive and everyone has equal opportunity to demonstrate their suitability.

We are proud to be a Disability Confident employer and are committed to making reasonable adjustments where required. Additionally, where practicable. We offer an interview to disabled candidates who meet the minimum requirements for a role. To discuss in more detail, please contact [email protected]
