You’re a role model, a listener and a vital source of support for officers. Apply today and be a crucial part of the Met, London and the communities you’ll serve.

As a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) you’ll be supporting Londoners in the heart of their communities and will help to tackle the things that matter most to them. You could be working in either our Safer Neighbourhood or Transport teams and both roles will involve interacting with the public, gathering intelligence and playing a key role in keeping London safe. Our Safer Neighbourhood teams offer a visible police presence and reduce crime and antisocial behaviour at local levels and our Transport teams focus on keep London’s roads and over-ground transport networks moving and operating safely.

The Role

“I like this role because each day is a new learning opportunity”

Your day to day duties will ultimately depend on which team you are allocated to but routine PCSO duties include assisting and supporting police officers, gathering intelligence, carrying out security patrols and reassuring the public.

Depending on which role you take, you could be trained and called upon to do any number of activities including:

  • Providing support at ceremonial and special events.
  • Responding to major incidents and security alerts.
  • Making house-to-house enquiries.
  • Helping to keep London’s road network running.
  • Issuing fixed penalty notices.

Of course, your responsibilities could extend far beyond this (depending on where you’re needed), from policing special events and responding to major incidents, to keeping roads running smoothly.

In return, you’ll be rewarded with a competitive salary (circa £30,232), full training package and will be part of a social organisation that’s serious about your personal development.

PCSOs are crucial to the Metropolitan Police and by supporting our officers, you will be giving them more time to deploy their specialist skills. You’ll be working alongside existing units, preventing crime and providing a reassuring and visible presence across the Capital whilst building meaningful relationships with Londoners.

The Person

  • The ideal PCSO is an excellent communicator and will be comfortable speaking to members of the public.
  • We are looking for a keen learner who is keen to engage and succeed in both initial and further training programs.
  • Whatever your background, you’ll bring valuable life skills and experience, will understand the importance of community engagement and will care about others, wanting to see them safe and well.
  • In addition, training will involve Personal Safety Training and Emergency Life Support training and so a reasonable level of fitness will be required.
  • Applicants should hold a GCSE Grade C (or equivalent) in English and evidence of qualification will be required. For those who do not hold this qualification, a written test will be available.

Right now, we’re looking for PCSOs across London. Although we can’t guarantee where you’ll be placed, we’ll try to balance your preference against where the Met needs you the most.

You’ll also have the choice of full-time or part-time roles. Shifts usually last 9 to 10 hours. You’ll work day, evening and night shifts, depending on your location: 36 hours per week in total.

Does this sound like you? If yes, start your application now. Applications will be via a detailed online application form.

We view diversity as fundamental to our success. To tackle today’s complex policing challenges, we need a workforce made up from all of London’s communities. Applications from across the community are therefore essential.
