Description
As an Ophthalmic Technician you will greet patients and explain what they should expect during their examination. An Ophthalmic Technician escorts the patient to an exam room and performs diagnostic ophthalmic tests and procedures prior to physician seeing them.
What you will be doing
- Complete a detailed patient history including past medical history, family medical history and chief complaint
- Check patient’s visual acuity which includes far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception
- Examine eyes for abnormalities
- Perform other tests and measurements including A-scans, B-scans, fundus photography, corneal topography, HRTII and pachymetry
- Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes
- Measures intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test)
- Read patient’s eyeglass prescription with automated lensometry
- Chart results in patient’s electronic medical record
- Provide chair-side physician assistance as needed
- Prepare necessary paperwork for surgeries ordered by the physicians
- Give instructions to patients concerning eye care
- E-prescribe or phone in prescriptions for patients
- Maintain patient confidentiality following HIPAA regulations
- Ensure appropriate supplies/equipment are available and functional for patient care
What you know
Required
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a motor vehicle
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time and lift up to 50lbs
Desired
- One (1) or more years of experience working in a medical practice
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
- Electronic Medical Records (EMR) experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology
