Full Time Loughborough, England 21000 - 23000 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Local Unit & Position Description:
Here at DNV, what we do matters. Whether it’s helping the Energy Industry transition to a more decarbonised and sustainable future or helping safeguard life, property and the environment, every day, what you do will make a difference. This is our shared purpose and one our people are proud to be part of.

You’ll join our growing Technical Safety team, providing consultancy and risk-management services including risk identification, assessment and mitigation and risk-based decision support, to customers right across the Oil and Gas supply chain and increasingly into the evolving hydrogen sector and other allied areas of Energy transition (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), renewables).

We just love finding innovative solutions to our industry’s most challenging problems. Supporting with the delivery of our customer projects, you’ll be given real responsibility throughout your time with us, helping develop your skills, knowledge and understanding of the Energy industry, laying the foundations for you to not only develop your career within this fast evolving and dynamic industry, but also make a genuine impact on the future of our planet.

Our Opportunity:

As a highly analytical student, studying towards a degree in subjects such as Chemical, Process Safety or Mechanical Engineering, Maths, Physics or Risk & Reliability, our summer or year-long placements provide a fantastic opportunity to gain practical work experience to complement your university studies.

Based from either our Loughborough (Leicestershire) or London offices (with occasional requirement for travel to client sites), you’ll utilise your analytical and problem-solving skills to help our customers across the Energy industry, identify and implement innovative solutions to impact the transition to a more decarbonized and sustainable future.

Our Summer placements are usually 10-12 weeks in duration, commencing from June onwards, whereas our one-year placement opportunities tend to commence in August or September and run through for a full twelve months.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll be stretched, but always supported, surrounded by people who want you to thrive, develop and embrace new challenges. And if you enjoy your time with us, you could be offered the opportunity to join our Graduate Programme at the end of your studies.

During your time with us, you will be given opportunity to:
  • Learn how major hazards, their likelihood and consequences are managed; understanding the importance of reliability of safeguards; and how to make balanced risk-based arguments for safe operations.
  • Apply consequence and risk assessment methods and tools to solve real customer issues using industry leading software and tools, validated through large/full scale experiments performed at our major hazards testing and research facility in Spadeadam. Gas dispersion studies, advanced computational simulations, and quantitative risk assessments are just a taste of the projects that you will work on.
  • Engage with clients to understand their challenges as they seek to make the Energy industry safer and more sustainable, with a special focus on energy transition challenges.
  • Work alongside our experts and participate in client discussions to develop your understanding of the industry, its terminology, our customer’s challenges and how different engineering disciplines contribute to safety.
Position Qualifications:
What will you bring?

Our placement opportunities are aimed at undergraduates looking to develop their skills and experience and share our passion for changing our industry. Apart from that, we love people who demonstrate a real thirst for knowledge, enjoy a challenge and possess the ability to problem solve and engage positively with others.

We keep our list of essential requirements to a minimum, but there are a few things needed to qualify for our placement scheme:
  • Studying towards a degree in Physics, Mathematics, Risk & Reliability, Process Safety or either Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Self-motivated to develop your personal and professional skills
  • Excellent numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills (experience in Excel or mathematical modelling/programming background will be beneficial, although not essential) demonstrating the ability to produce technical reports detailing clear outcomes of the analysis for customers
  • Pro-active willingness to learn new skills displaying a willingness to “get stuck in” and undertake work outside ‘comfort zone’ demonstrating appropriate balance between asking for help and using own initiative / think through the problem
  • Excellent interpersonal and team working skills, confident in building professional relationships and demonstrates first class written, verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to plan and prioritise own time and activities, to meet deadlines and achieve project objectives
What you’ll receive in return:

Whether you join us for a summer, a year or permanently, we value all our people and the contributions they make to our business, so it’s important that our rewards make us all feel valued here. That’s why we offer a flexible reward and benefits package, allowing you to choose the things that matter most to you, including;
  • Starting Salary £21,000-23,000 (ProRated) based on 37.5 hours per week
  • Exceptional development and support, with the potential to join our Graduate Development Programme, following completion of your degree

  • Wellbeing benefits: (inc Private Medical and Dental Insurance, Health Assessments, Gym allowance). Company contribution towards eye tests and glasses (for computer/laptop users), and Flu Vaccinations.
