Physiotherapist (U18)
Contract Type: Permanent
Salary: £30,000 to £35,000 per annum
Hours per week: 40 (including evening and weekend work as required, including all home and away fixtures)
Sunderland AFC is looking to appoint a full-time physiotherapist to work with our U18 squad. Reporting to the Head of Performance and Medicine, this opportunity comes at an exciting time for the football club, as our football operations continue to progress significantly across the Academy and First Team. The U18 group are coming off the back of an outstanding season in 2022/23, finishing runners up to Manchester City in the Premier League U18 North League. As we look to progress our Performance and Medical operations across the Academy and First Team, we are looking to appoint the U18 Physiotherapist ready for the upcoming 2023/24 season.
The successful candidate will lead in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation programmes for the Academy Players in the U18 Squad, as well as working as part of the multi-disciplinary team across the academy age groups as required. Candidates must be aware of the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) and be able to contribute positively towards maintaining the club’s EPPP Category One Status.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Conduct accurate assessments of injuries to all U18 players.
- Lead on the management of injuries to all U18 players.
- Within the framework provided by the Academy Sports Medicine programme, design, deliver and monitor the provision of high functioning Sports Medicine support to the Academy U18 playing squad, which both facilitates the physical development of all individual players (in line with the objectives of the Medical and Performance department, and the wider Academy) and maximizes player availability across the U18 season.
- Ensure all Sports Medicine support meets the needs of the Academy environment in an evidence-informed manner, providing the highest level of care in both a proactive (injury prevention), and reactive (injury management) context.
- Support the Head Academy Physiotherapist in constantly assessing/evaluating/adapting the operation of the Sports Medicine support programme, to ensure it consistently meets its stated objectives, as well as positively contributing to the achievement of the Medical and Performance and wider Academy objectives.
- Support the Head Academy Physiotherapist in ensuring the Academy Sports Medicine support service complies with, and indeed exceeds, all the necessary requirements attached to the Academy’s Category One status.
- Actively engage with Continuing Professional Development, and, working with the Head of Medical and Performance, maintain an up-to-date personal development plan.
- In particular within the above, maintain compliance with all guidelines as regards the safe use of videography and photography, such that it is only utilized within the context of the professional execution of the outlined role (never for personal use or promotion).
- Record and maintain accurate medical notes and rehabilitation plans using both the PMA and TMA software programmes.
- Contribute effectively to the wider MDT group within daily, weekly and periodical Performance and Medical Domain meetings.
- Contribute positively to the Performance and Medical Domain in-house CPD programme.
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Lead the provision of an elite programme of Sports Medicine support for the U18 playing squad, including (but not limited to) providing support for training and match days, injury diagnosis/treatment, working with injured athletes throughout their rehabilitation, and providing individualised pre-hab/mobility programmes.
- Take an active role in recruitment and maintenance of the part time pool of medical staff.
Essential Criteria:
- BSc Physiotherapy
- CSP Registration
- HCPC registration
- Minimum 2 years Post Graduate Experience
- Experience in Sporting Environments
- Valid UK Driving Licence
Desirable Criteria:
- ATMMiF Qualification
- MSc Physiotherapy / Sports Medicine
- Academy Football Experience (Category 1 Academy)
