Permanent Registered Veterinary Nurse - Holyhead, Anglesey Type: Small Animal Location: Holyhead, Anglesey Practice Type: Part of a group - They have a loyal client base. They see lots of dogs, cats, and exotics. Once a week they run a one-hour RSPCA clinic on behalf of the local RSPCA branch. Facilities: Their equipment is extensive and includes a modern IDEXX in-house laboratory (catalyst and procyte), digital AGFA CR X-ray, video endoscope and bronchoscope, colour Doppler ultrasound with ECG, tonopen, slit lamp - all of these would allow candidates to work up cases fully in-house.
Services: They have a varied workload that ranges from the standard (e.g. vaccinations, microchipping, neutering, dentals, in-house laboratory, X-ray interpretation of pet passports, pregnancy diagnosis with ultrasound, hip and elbow scoring, PAT dog assessments), to more specialist services and treatments, such as chemotherapy, echocardiograms, ECG, video endoscope and bronchoscope for non-invasive investigations and advanced surgeries. Team: Their fantastic team comprises 2 full-time vets, with a 3rd vet due to start in autumn, 2.5 veterinary nursing and reception staff, and their Clinical Director who holds a PGCertSAS. The principal vet has a particular interest in small animal surgery and orthopaedics (regularly carrying out TTAs) and holds a PGCertSAS also.
Role: They have an excellent opportunity for a Registered Veterinary Nurse to join their busy team. Hours: Most of their nurses work a 4-day week with a share in the Saturday rota but there is no out-of-hours requirement. OOHS: Their emergency out of hours is undertaken by VetsNow, though they continue to look after in-patients. Duties: Their nursing team help with administration, reception, and cleaning duties as well as: Assisting vets during consulting, X-rays, surgery, post-op care/discharge, and house visits Monitor anaesthetics Conduct Schedule 3 procedures and dental scale and polish Take skin scrapes, hair plucks, cytology samples, urine samples, etc, and interpret findings Take and develop X-rays Conduct sterilisation/regular maintenance of practice equipment as appropriate Run and maintain the biochemistry, haematology, and coagulation machine Provide food and drink for animals as required Create and implement care plans for in-patients and update computer records Administer flea and worming treatments and implant microchips Hold nursing clinics (e.g.
diabetic, geriatric, dental, puppy parties) and special events (information days, open days) Maintain contact with clients about the animal’s well-being after surgery Instruct and supervise work experience students/pupils and act as clinical coach after relevant training Ensure up-to-date knowledge of drugs, diets, behavioural aids, etc. Maintain regular contact with the principal vet about all nursing matters Assist in establishing practice protocols, procedures, and instruction sheets and in the preparation for VMD/RCVS, etc. inspections Have a proactive attitude towards lifelong learning (CPD) and keep this up to date Be familiar with RVN rules and regulations and RCVS Maintain the highest level of knowledge in all aspects relevant to your job and adhere to Best Practice at all times Demonstrate a commitment to collegiality Applicant Requirements: RVN qualification/student nurse Relevant companion animal nursing experience (including exotics) Ability to assist the veterinary surgeon in routine and non-routine ops, good knowledge of emergency nursing Excellent communication skills Experienced in using X-ray, dental scale and polish, blood pressure and able to set up ultrasound; experienced in processing and interpreting urine and cytology samples Experienced in reception duties, including order, computer and phone use Experienced in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene Good time management and organisational skills Proactive and motivated with strong attention to detail Ability to work well under pressure Good standard of personal presentation Salary: They offer a competitive salary for this role is up to £30,000 depending on experience.
