Position: People and Culture Manager

Salary: £30,000 – £35,000 (DOE)

Contract: Full Time, Permanent

Hours: 37.5 hours/week

Location: Chesterfield or Derby would be preferred as the base office, but the successful candidate can work at any of our locations: Chesterfield, Corby, Coventry, Derby, Hinckley, Kettering, Leicester, Market Harborough, Redditch, and Wolverhampton. Hybrid working, with minimum 2 days in office, is an option.

Occasional travel to our centres across the Midlands will be part of this role.

Reporting to: Managing Directors

About the Role: The People and Culture Manager will be responsible for overseeing our People and Culture (Human Resources) function across the Company. The People and Culture Manager (PCM) will champion the wellbeing and success of our approximately 130 employees and will make significant contributions to our developing People strategy. The successful candidate will be able to provide expert People advice to managers across the Company and will work to ensure that we are embedding best practices in our policies, procedures, and processes. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of experience in HR/People and Culture, preferably in an HR/People generalist role. Experience in learning and development would also be desirable.

After a minimum of 1 year, this role has the opportunity to evolve into a more senior position within the Company.

Key Responsibilities:

People:

  • Manage employee records in our Human Resource Information System (HRIS)
  • Prepare and issue a range of People documentation, and ensure proper and secure filing of documents (both electronically and hard copies)
  • Coordinate with the Finance department to ensure payroll is accurate
  • Oversee recruitment processes and assist Hiring Managers with attracting and onboarding talented individuals to the Company
  • Manage all onboarding and offboarding processes, including Safer Recruitment and management of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks
  • Respond to day-to-day enquiries from internal and external parties in a timely manner
  • Review and develop internal People processes and procedures to improve efficiency and ensure compliance and consistency
  • Track and report on key People metrics, such as turnover rates and stability index
  • Provide expert People advice and support to managers and team leaders at all levels of the Company, identifying options and advice on potential risks, and escalating issues to senior managers and Managing Directors when appropriate
  • Provide expert assistance with employer relations issues, communicating clearly and effectively with all relevant parties (including any external parties, such as trade union representatives) in any potential disputes, in a timely manner
  • Assist managers with performance management, including probation assessments, and succession planning
  • Assist managers with absence management
  • Work in collaboration with the Compliance Team and Senior Leadership Team to ensure People and Culture Policies are kept up to date in line with legislation and best practice

Culture:

  • Work in collaboration with Managing Directors, Senior Leadership Team, and Chief of Staff to develop robust understanding of the business and implement plans that drive increased performance and employee engagement
  • Assist the Managing Directors, Senior Leadership Team, and Chief of Staff with projects strategically aimed to develop the Company into an ‘Employer of Choice’
  • Lead in the development and implementation of induction training for new employees
  • Work with the SLT to develop and manage the internal mentorship programme for new and established employees
  • Work with the Director of Excellence to identify and develop internal training for managers
  • Identify external training opportunities available to our staff and promote these opportunities internally
  • Work with the SLT to ensure the Company’s values are embedded into internal training opportunities
  • Act as a champion of good management practices across the Company

General:

  • Maintain an awareness of and actively follow and promote Company policies, including, but not limited to, Safer Recruitment, Data Protection, Information Security, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, Safeguarding, and Prevent
  • Undertake any training as required by Company policy and take responsibility for professional development
  • Work to minimise our operational impacts on the environment
  • Other duties as assigned by the Managing Directors

About the Candidate: The successful candidate will have the following essential qualifications, experience, and skills:

  • GCSEs at grade A*-C (new grades 4-9) in English and Maths, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications
  • Associate Diploma in People Management (CIPD Level 5) or higher OR Undergraduate degree or higher in related field, such as Human Resource Management
  • 3+ years of experience working in People and Culture or Human Resources
  • Knowledge of employment, labour, and equality laws
  • Knowledge and/or experience of tools and approaches to drive employee engagement
  • Knowledge and/or experience in identifying, attracting, and recruiting talent
  • Knowledge of performance management and approaches to developing and retaining talent
  • Knowledge of approaches to creating an inclusive workplace culture
  • Knowledge of how to support employees with continuing professional development
  • Knowledge of principles of conflict resolution and different approaches to negotiation and mediation
  • Understanding of ethical decision-making processes
  • Ability to build positive working relationships and trust at all levels of a company/organisation
  • Ability to self-motivate and work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate information, advice, and opinions, while considering audience, potential reactions, and method of communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening
  • Ability to empathise with others and consider their wellbeing
  • Ability to show sensitivity and respect to all, demonstrating value for diverse views and opinions
  • Ability to generate enthusiasm in others and develop team rapport
  • Skilled in integrating constructive feedback and receptive to new ideas
  • Basic data analysis skills, e.g., means, medians, modes, percentiles, correlations
  • Basic data presentation skills, e.g., turning data into simple charts and graphs
  • HRIS proficient
  • IT proficient with an ability to use all Microsoft Office programmes, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams
  • Ideal candidates will have these qualities: ethical, resilient, innovative, pragmatic, conscientious

Desirable experience, knowledge, and skills:

  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Training/qualification in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the past 3 years
  • Experience in learning and development
  • Experience in collecting and analysing People data and presenting this information to Company/organisation stakeholders
  • Experience in conflict resolution or mediation
  • Experience working in the further education/ employability and skills training sector
