You’ll be part of our high profile and busy Payroll team within Companies House. Focusing on ensuring that our employees are paid the right salary and benefits on time. That employees are added to the payroll when they join and are removed from the payroll when they leave.
Our team prides themselves on delivering an excellent customer service to the department.
With a solution focused approach: you will be supporting all payroll and pension related enquiries and issues. We work alongside our HR function to ensure that we can deliver improvements to our services and operational delivery.
We are working in a Hybrid way and currently attending the office once a week which will be the expectation with this role.
Job description
Administration of payroll changes and queries, including, change of hours, work patterns, annual leave, and flexi
Checking accuracy of employee’s payslips and ensuring the correct deductions and payments are made
Person specification
As our Payroll Support Officer, you’ll have fantastic attention to detail and really enjoy working with numbers.
Confident in your communication skills, we’re looking for someone who is prepared to use their own initiative and enjoys working as part of a team.
Having a continuous improvement ethos, you’ll look for ways to develop and improve common issues.
Desirable to have some payroll experience.

Selection process details
For this role you will be expected to complete a Civil Service Numerical test, this is the first stage of the application process. More details on this will be provided at the beginning of the assessment.
Once you have completed the assessment you will be required to complete your application form.
In your application form we’d like you to:
- Tell us about your employment history, including any key responsibilities and achievements.
- Write 250 words giving us an example of a time when you demonstrated Communicating & Influencing – this could be a piece of work, a project or a task.
- Write 250 words on when you have demonstrated Working Together - this could be a piece of work, a project or a task.
- Finally, we’d like you to write a personal statement of 500 words where you tell us about why you’d be great for the role, including how you meet the skills we’ve said we're looking for in the person specification.
We’re committed to being diverse and inclusive, so please make your application anonymous by removing all identifying personal information (such as names and dates) from your employment history and personal statement.
What will the process look like?
- If we have a high number of applications, we’ll carry out a pre-sift on your Civil Service Numerical test results and on your 250 words on Communicating & Influencing and 250 words on Working Together. Candidates who are successful in the pre-sift stage will progress to the main sift.
- If we don’t receive a high number of applications, your test result and 250 words about each behaviour will be considered as part of the main sift.
- If you're successful at main sift stage, we'll invite you to attend a virtual interview using Microsoft Teams.
Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
