Job description
The laboratory work consists of supporting the Biomedical Scientists (BMS). This mainly involves labelling and registering samples into the laboratory computer system for analysis, answering phone queries, dealing with visitors at the reception. The successful candidates will also be required to work in different area of Pathology when the need arises.
The phlebotomy work consists mainly of taking blood from patients’ arms. Full training will be provided for all duties. It would be highly desirable if you have been trained as a phlebotomist.
The post holder will be a part of a team of Biomedical Support Workers delivering support services to departments within Pathology.
The post holder will work under supervision while processing blood, urine, human tissue and other materials.
To perform laboratory duties as directed by a supervisor.
The post holder will undertake some technical and administrative tasks to ensure reliable service delivery.

Safely handle potentially infectious blood, urine, human tissue samples, and hazardous chemicals on a daily basis.
Assist with the training of trainee biomedical support workers and trainee phlebotomists and perform competency assessment documentation
Attend all mandatory and statutory training.
Ensure that the workplace and workbenches are kept clean and tidy.
Maintain a flexible approach to the post in order to rapidly assimilate changes in workload, patterns and requirements.
Ensure that reagents are stored and used according to manufacturer and laboratory procedures.
Participate in Phlebotomy services as required including Paediatric Phlebotomy Clinic
Carry out appropriate daily maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment prior to them being used for patient investigations.
Perform manual and automated laboratory investigations to Standard Operating Procedures.
Support the Biomedical Scientist staff in processing of samples.
Sort check and label samples when required.
Subject to competence assessment the post holder may discharge technical duties as part of a small team outside core hours to support the laboratory service.
Participate in effective stock control of reagents and consumables.
Use the Pathology inventory management system.
Enter patient demographics and technical laboratory data onto the Laboratory Information System.
Carry out postal duties including: Incoming mail, outgoing mail and referred samples and using
Participate in the shift system as required.
Work on the sendaway bench
Can label and request all samples from diverse screening programs.
