The successful applicant will work as part of the team supporting our specialist disciplines to provide consistently high standards of patient care, as well as ensuring practice standards are maintained to a high quality.

You will be working in a busy environment as part of a large multidisciplinary team, where no two days are the same. Our expectation of you is that you take the highest level of care, have pride in your work and use your initiative in creating a better world for pets.

Our Patient Care Assistants undertake a variety of duties as directed by the Veterinary Surgeons and/or Registered Veterinary Nurses, and duties or responsibilities may include:

  • Attending afternoon rounds meeting with charge team, anaesthetists, and other service nurses to discuss cases for the next day
  • Attending afternoon rounds with clinicians and inpatient care nurses to discuss inpatients, consultations, and surgeries for the day.
  • Ensuring all consult rooms are clean and tidy and fully stocked before consults begin the next day
  • Ensuring admittance list is current at both the start and end of each shift
  • Use the kennel capacity option on Animana (practice management software) to monitor the inpatient numbers and level of care needed
  • Assigning clinician to the patient on admit so that all costing is assigned to the correct discipline
  • Completing admission paperwork and patient admissions with owners dealing with their concerns in a compassionate and effective manner
  • Assisting in the preparation of the patient for procedures including placing IV lines, taking blood samples, and completing any preoperative tasks required
  • Communicating effectively with clinicians, anaesthetists, charge nurses and in patient care team about any emergency requests
  • Preparing procedure lists for following day and attend afternoon rounds meeting to discuss the following day
  • Processing lab samples
  • Accompaning owners when transporting patients from buildings
  • Facilitating safe and effective discharges by co-ordinating with the client care team, clinicians and in patient care staff to include discharge times, preparation of discharge instructions, medications and any further appointments required for the patient
  • You will be responsible for daily owner updates
  • Dispensing medications both for inpatients and repeat prescription requests.
  • Be responsible for initiating arrangements for imaging and/or procedures.
  • You will work closely with the client care team in the acceptance of emergency referrals.

You will be included in the IPC rota to cover weekend days

This is a full time permanent position, 40 hours per week with hours varying between 10am and 8pm

We are a true multidisciplinary referral only hospital with departments in orthopaedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, neurology, internal medicine, oncology, anaesthesia and diagnostic imaging. Each of the clinical disciplines is staffed to European Diplomate or RCVS Specialist standards. The hospital is well equipped and provides excellent inpatient facilities with qualified RVNs and veterinary interns on-site 24/7. Imaging includes computed radiography, fluoroscopy (with digital subtraction and road-mapping), ultrasonography and on-site MRI and CT.
