Job description
To provide a support role to the Charity Shop Manager in pursuit of the smooth running of the shop operation and achievement of the financial sales targets, through assistance with the daily operational procedures to required standards of performance.
Principal Accountabilities
To assist with all sales floor and work area, hygiene and housekeeping practices:
Ensuring that work areas are maintained in a tidy state to avoid obstruction of walkways and doorways. To assist with cleaning back areas after sorting and processing practises
Checking the sales area at regular intervals to ensure that good housekeeping practises are maintained
· To assist in ensuring that volunteers understand their tasks and duties
· To assist, as instructed, with sorting and selection, processing and preparation of donated stock intended for sale or storage, ensuring that the required standards of presentation and quality are adhered to
· To assist with take offs and rotation of stock on the sales floor
· To assist with all matters relating to receipt of donated stock and stock rotated from other branches
· To assist with long-term storage, promotional events and preparation for the launch of new season products
· To undertake such duties as requested by the management in merchandising the stock onto the sales floor each day
· To replenish display stock in the window to the standard required
· To assist with the planning of window themes
· To attend to customer sales at the counter, adhering to all policies and procedures and matters of security
· To ensure all those who donate goods for sale in the charity shop are asked to complete a gift aid declaration and that such declarations and the stock to which they relate are processed in the agreed manner
· To undertake, when requested, cashing up and completion of financial forms, and to bank daily takings as required
· To assist in the compliance of all current legislation and Branch & Society policies
· To attend management meetings and training courses as requested
· To carry out such other tasks as directed by the Charity Shop Manager
While at work all staff are required to:
· Take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts and omissions
· Co-operate with Branch policies and procedures for health and safety
In addition to the above all Retail Assistants, are required to:
· Be familiar and comply with Branch policies and procedures for health and safety
· Be able to provide cover for days off and holidays and also to provide cover when needed within the Retail network at various local branch locations
Essential
· Good general level of education, at least to GCSE standard or equivalent
· Previous retail experience
· Experience of dealing with customers
· Experience of cash handling
· Good communication skills both written & oral
· Sympathy with the RSPCA’s aims and policies
· A person with drive and enthusiasm that works at pace
· Calm under pressure
· Resilient in the face of setbacks
· Ability to relate well to people from all backgrounds
· Honest, trustworthy and reliable
· Must be able to travel around the Branch area and work at other charity shops if required.
Desirable
· Any retailing or customer service qualification
· Charity retail experience
· Experience of working with groups of volunteers
· Understanding of the Gift Aid System and ability to interact with potential donors to maximise income from the scheme
· Experience of till operation
· Experience of computers/IT
· Willingness to learn and acquire new skills through training and development
