About The Role
We are looking for a Legal Counsel to join our Legal Team on a part time, permanent basis (3 days per week).
As a key member of the Legal Team you will play a pivotal role in a growing business, providing in-house legal support and strengthening existing legal compliance and governance across the business. Reporting to the Head of Legal you will work with and support a number of teams across the business. This is a great opportunity for a commercial solicitor to join a growing business.
We are flexible on remote working but would like you to be within travelling distance of our Leeds office and be able to come into the office at least twice a month. The salary for this position is up to £40K PTE (£66.5K FTE)
You will be involved in:
- Providing legal advice across Hippo Digital
- Being the lead lawyer involved in guiding the business on numerous client contract negotiations, reviewing and drafting contracts and inputting into bids as required
- Advising the business on how to manage risks and helping to strengthen relationships with our customers through the contracting process
- Providing briefings and training across Hippo Digital to promote an understanding of key and new legal issues important to our business
- Ensuring all contracts, legal documents and templates are regularly reviewed, up-to-date and compliant with laws and best practice, and maintaining mechanisms to monitor on-going compliance
- Periodic and pro-active review of legal and compliance risks ensuring checks are in place to detect and control such risks
- Instructing, managing and building strong, amicable relationships with external legal partners where necessary
Skills and experience that you need
- You’ll be a qualified Solicitor with a minimum of 5 years PQE in order to have gained the relevant experience required to do the role
- You’ll have experience of IT and digital contracts and in leading digital consultancy based contract negotiations including spotting and mitigating risks associated with digital project delivery
- You’ll have strong knowledge of commercial contracts, general services agreements, consultancy agreements, data protection, commercial and wider company law matters
- You’ll be able to work in a fast-paced environment with clients who need pragmatic advice
- Ability to effectively translate complex matters into easily understood legal advice
- Exceptional technical and legal drafting skills
- A hands-on approach to problem solving, excellent interpersonal skills and a high degree of integrity are all required
- You’ll be highly organised and able to independently manage a busy workload
Desirable, but not essential:
- You’ll ideally have experience of public procurement frameworks such as DOS, G Cloud and Digital Capability for Health.
- Ideally you’ll have some experience of working in-house or as part of a small legal team where both a strategic and hands-on approach is required

Hippo locations
Our Hippo offices are in Leeds, London, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester. However, we invite candidates to apply from anywhere in the UK who can be flexible regarding location. We offer a relocation support package of up to £8k to help cover the cost of moving somewhere within commuting distance of one of our locations. Please note that due to the nature of the business, we may also request that you work from client locations or your home.
