The Paralegal – Litigation provides coordination for a variety of functions within the Litigation Team in support of the vision, mission and business plan of AHS. Working under limited guidance, the position is responsible for assisting lawyers in all matters related to litigation legal matters, including day to day administration, file collection and distribution and preparing hearing binders, exhibits and authorities as required. This position directly assists the Associate General Counsel, Litigation in administrative and leadership matters. Consulting with other professionals within AHS as required, this position interprets client needs, assesses requirements and identifies solutions to standard issues and requests. This is a temporary 12–14-month position.
Description:
The Litigation Paralegal in Legal & Privacy is a professional position reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Litigation. The position provides coordination for a variety of functions within the Litigation Team in support of the vision, mission and business plan of AHS. Working under limited guidance, the position is responsible for assisting lawyers in all litigation matters, including day-to-day administration, file collection and distribution, drafting legal documents and correspondence, conducting research, gathering documents and communicating effectively with various client groups. The Paralegal provides background information and support for all levels of management and front-line staff during the process and resolution of litigation matters. Consulting with other professionals within AHS as required, this position interprets client needs, assesses requirements and identifies solutions to standard issues and requests. The position is also responsible for: managing ongoing litigation files within AHS; providing confidential, knowledgeable, professional and precise information and guidance to AHS staff in dealing with litigation matters; facilitates all aspects of the litigation process as directed by internal and external counsel; accepting service of originating documents; completing file opening and closing protocols; document organization and production; conducting factual and legal research: collecting relevant information from a variety of sources; assisting counsel in preparation for hearings, including locating and contacting potential witnesses, gathering any additional documents required and advising legal counsel of developments; providing back-up coverage for the other Litigation paralegals, as required.

A minimum of an undergrad degree, paralegal diploma or equivalent education and experience is preferred. Previous experience of a minimum of five years related legal experience in private and/or public sector legal environment. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development.
Additional Required Qualifications:Experience in project work, processing and maintaining legal files. Experience in research, data analysis and/or interpretation, evaluation methodologies, and developing effective reports. Experience drafting complex pleadings, documents and correspondence. Ability to attend to timely filing of submissions, applications and related documents. Experience with Outlook and ability to manage multiple calendars. Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders to respond to standard requests and relay information. General knowledge of the client group/function supported and the standards, policies, procedures. Experience as a team member in project planning, execution, reporting, monitoring and evaluation. Understanding of physical and human resource management principles, concepts and financial impact. Knowledge and skills in problem solving and concerns resolution. Strong commitment to operating within a team environment and the ability to work with others to achieve common goals. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Effective communicator with strong organizational skills, influential skills, and client focused orientation and commitment to providing quality services. Demonstrated ability to facilitate change. Ability to negotiate with, and handle, demanding or difficult external contacts, as well as sensitive corporate and legal issues.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity is preferred (healthcare experience an asset). Legal, medical and insurance terminology desirable.
