Job description
Special education paraprofessionals, under the direct supervision of special education teachers and administration, provide assistance to both teachers and students in learning lesson plans. They may also work in specialized programs or on an individual basis with students requiring close supervision and special assistance. The paraprofessional provides support, explanation, re-teaching and discipline.
Will support and assist students within the classroom or other educational settings so that all of their support needs are met. Specific roles/duties are determined by the level of student needs and severity of students’ disabilities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Function as an extension of the general and/or special education teacher by supporting the social, behavioral, academic, self-help, and health development of students with disabilities.
Support the implementation and progress monitoring of Individualized Education Plans.
Provide individual/group support to students both within and outside of the general setting to provide access to general activities to the maximum extent possible.
Assist both special education as well as general education teachers with maintaining student IEP records.
Work within a team of other professionals such as speech therapist, counselor, occupational therapist, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Associate Degree OR
Forty-eight (48) hours of approved college courses OR
Pass ParaPro Praxis and High school diploma or equivalent
Desire to assist students with special needs in any education environment
Preferred:
Experience working with students with characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder
Familiarity with FBA/BIPs
CPI Certification
