Role Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to build a career in communications. The role of Student Communications Graduate Intern will support the development and delivery of student communications at the University of Birmingham. This role reports into the Student Communications Officer as part of the team responsible for communicating to students at the University. The role is broad and uses a range of channels including but not limited to, digital communications, print/publicity marketing, social media, and events support, within a coordinated communications community.
A relevant communications-based experience (it doesn’t have to be from a professional setting) is a plus, and ideally a demonstrable background in successfully building relationships with people at all levels.
A flexible combination of administrative and project-based support is required together with an organised and pro-active approach. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and an ability to use social media effectively and creatively in support of the work of the communications team are also required.
This role is based in the Student Services Division, part of Academic Services, which is at the heart of education and research endeavour at the University. The remit of this role is across the whole organisation - you will play an important role in the University’s student communications community and will work closely with colleagues in other key teams.
Main Duties
- Supporting the development and delivery of multi-channel communication activities to the student community.
- Coordination of communications briefings, web pages, newsletters and social media campaigns, as appropriate. Including copywriting content for student audience.
- Providing day-to-day support to the Student Communications team.
- The production of print and digital promotional materials and information.
- Utilising social media in appropriate circumstances to target key audiences.
- To write copy and source photography for news feeds and campaigns.
- To utilise content management systems for the MyUoB student app and student intranet.
- Providing a primary point of contact for the team.
- To use a CRM system to effectively target key messages to students and support email campaigns and our regular student e-newsletter.
- Proactively identifying creative internal communications opportunities and helping to
- Working with colleagues across the institution and encouraging the sharing of ideas and best practice.
- Undertaking administrative activities to support the work of the role, these will include keeping project documentation and undertaking finance activity (e.g. raising purchase orders).
- To brief in and undertake simple graphic design projects and video projects as required.
- To supervise student workers or volunteers on specific communications projects.
- Support the team in creating regular analytics and evaluation of our student communications.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
- Must be a recent University of Birmingham graduate.
- Relevant degree or other marketing/communications-based qualifications would be ideal.
- An interest in the communications profession, and a willingness to develop and learn new skills through professional development and training.
- A clear and demonstrable understanding about the nature of the diverse student community at the University of Birmingham; showing an awareness of our student demographics and understanding of the requirements of the student community at the University of Birmingham.
- Knowledge of emerging social media trends and experience of utilising these channels within a communications or marketing role.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications and demonstrable ability to pick up and use new software.
- Significant experience of copywriting, proofreading and content editing with clear evidence of delivering communications campaigns and/or marketing outputs.
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, spoken and written communication skills to deal effectively, confidently and appropriately with students and staff at all levels.
- Experience of delivering an effective, high quality customer orientated service, demonstrating a proactive approach to service improvements.
- Ability to prioritise workload and anticipate problems, to progress work thoroughly and reliably sometimes under pressure and to tight deadlines, without reference to others.
- High levels of attention to detail.
- An effective team player who can demonstrate that they have not only worked successfully as part of a team, but that they are able to self-direct workload and priorities.
- Flexibility to work out of hours, on occasion, as required.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience of stakeholder communications or marketing within a large complex organisation; ideally having experience of student communications within an educational organisation such as Higher Education.
- Experience of working with Content Management Systems (CMS).
- Experience of using a Customer Relationships Management (CRM) system.
- Experience of graphical design packages and associated technologies (e.g. Adobe software).
- Experience of video production.
- Experience of using digital analytics or communications evaluation techniques.
