Cawood Scientific Limited (Cawood), part of Ensign Bickford Industries (our US parent company),is the UK’s leading independent scientific group, recognised for its technical capability and value-added service to customers. We provide laboratory analysis to the agriculture, food and environmental sectors, as well as contract research to GLP standards to support the development of agrochemicals, biocides and other chemicals.
Elab, Part of Cawood, are looking for an Organics Laboratory Manager to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis.
The Role:
The Laboratory Manager is principally responsible for overseeing the planning and management of the analytical workload within the organics laboratory to ensure sample testing is completed in a timely and safe manner in accordance with the requirements of the Quality Systems.
Maintaining good communication channels with the General Manager and all staff on site at all times is an essential part of this role. The post holder will work closely with other departments and requires the post holder to help with training, equipment maintenance and Health & Safety. You may act as a technical function dependant on qualifications and/or experience within organics testing. The position also requires the checking, validation, and approval of analytical data on worksheets, technical reports, and validation documents.
Other duties involve
Supervise Operations
- Overseeing the planning and scheduling of work orders that optimise resource efficiency and ensuring customer requests are completed within agreed timelines.
- Liaising with other departments where required, including communicating any operational issues in a timely fashion.
- Managing staffing requirements for safe and efficient daily laboratory operations.
- Performing analytical testing to support routine operations.
- Ensuring control of chemicals and consumables purchasing within their area.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of all methods, instrumentation and documentation relevant to the section.
- Ensuring the quality of work produced within the department
Manage human resources within the section
- Managing resource in compliance with the Employee Handbook.
- Performing interviews and ensuring new employees follow an appropriate induction training programme.
- Providing leadership to all personnel and encouraging personal development within the laboratory.
- Performing appraisals and ensuring staff are motivated in achieving site objectives.
- Ensuring training needs of the laboratory are identified and resolved in a timely manner
- Liaising with suppliers and placing orders accordingly.
Responsible for the day-to-day health and safety
- Ensuring safety rules are followed and that specified protective clothing available is used.
- Taking a proactive approach to help ensure the workplace is safe, with potential hazards identified and risks controlled.

- To deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility is needed, and the post holder may be required to perform work not specifically referred to above.
