About us

SELCS is a world-leading centre for teaching, research and public engagement, focussing on the literature, linguistic traditions, history, sociology, philosophy, art, film and other aspects of the cultures associated with the languages we teach. Our taught programmes are innovative and interdisciplinary; academic colleagues and students engage with many urgent concerns facing the world today by understanding Europe’s languages, cultures and histories and their impact globally. The SELCS Professional Services team provides a wide range of administrative support to facilitate the delivery of teaching and research activity. The team comprises 15.5FTE which is broadly split between two functions, Teaching and Student Support and Operations. We work collaboratively across the two functions and all team members share responsibilities, learn from and cover for each other as necessary.

About the role

We are recruiting Operations Officers to provide high quality, professional administrative support in a large teaching department at UCL. The role covers a broad range of responsibilities including financial and staffing administration, facilities management and communications support. You will work as part of team, liaising closely with departmental colleagues and across the university, advising and sharing knowledge as necessary, ensuring administrative tasks are handled appropriately. We have 2.0 FTE available and will consider requests for part time or job share. This role does not meet the eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa certificate of sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore UCL will not be able to sponsor individuals who require right to work in the UK to carry out this role.

About you

The post-holders will be educated to degree level or with equivalent experience and have substantial administrative experience in Higher Education or a comparable industry. They will have demonstrable experience of excellent organisational ability and attention to detail in a comparable previous post, and will have excellent communication skills, with a high level of written and spoken English to native-speaker level, and the ability to use an appropriate tone according to different situations. They will have knowledge of basic employment legislation and principles of HR processes, and a good understanding of the UK higher education system. The successful applicants will be very strong team players with an ability and willingness to work collaboratively within a context of shared goals and responsibilities. They will have excellent organisational and prioritisation skills and ability to remain focussed in spite of interruptions or competing demands, and the ability to multi task calmly and effectively in the context of a broad range of responsibilities.
