Full Time Cambridgeshire 32100 - 41700 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Salary: £32,100-£41,700

Location: Cambridge & hybrid working

Contract: Permanent, full time

Cambridge University Press and Assessment creates world-leading learning resources in print and digital format, and administers qualifications used by learners across the globe. We are a proud department of the University of Cambridge.

The University has ambitious targets to be carbon zero by 2048. For Cambridge University Press & Assessment, working towards that target means reducing our carbon emissions not only from our energy use and travel, but also our supply chains. We therefore have an exciting new opportunity for an enthusiastic and proactive Operations Environment Specialist within our International Property & Services Team (IPS). The role reports to the Property Environment Manager.

  • Do you have a passion for sustainability and want to make an impactful difference?
  • Do you have a good understanding of supply chains, particularly global freight and warehousing?

If you have answered yes to the above questions, we would love to hear from you. This is a new role and is pivotal in helping our organisation to reduce our impact on the environment. The role has a particular focus on addressing carbon emissions within our global supply chain, including our freight operations and warehousing, as part of organisation-wide efforts to tackle our ‘Scope 3' (indirect) carbon emissions.

About the role

This role aims to coordinate efforts to reduce our Scope 3 carbon emissions in our supply chains, with a focus on our freight and warehousing operations. Working across our organisation, you'll work to develop and support strategies which help us achieve this goal, and act as an advocate for meeting our sustainability and carbon objectives in the production and delivery of our products.

Although we have a good grasp of our scope 1 & 2 (directly controlled emissions such as property energy use), we need support to better understand, manage and reduce our scope 3 emissions. This will involve working collaboratively with our freight providers and warehousing to obtain their carbon emission data, monitor and scrutinise the data, standardise it and produce reports which help us measure our progress and manage our impacts.

There is need for tenacity as well as patience as this is a new role and working globally there is a requirement to have respect for different cultures and customs. It is an exciting time to join our team and organisation as we set ambitious targets and dedicate resource to meeting our environmental policies and targets.

Key tasks include:

  • Obtaining scope 3 data from our supply chain, freight, and warehousing.
  • Analysis of the data to understand where and how carbon reductions can be made.
  • Develop opportunities to be more efficient in our freight operations.
  • Provide regular management reports and updates.
  • Put in place and support strategies to reduce our scope 3 emissions.

About you

You are passionate about the environment and a sustainable future whilst keeping a balanced understanding of business needs and processes.

You have the ability to take a holistic global perspective but also be granular when required.

You will possess a good working knowledge of:

  • Supply chain and freight operations.
  • Global environmental and sustainability issues.

You will:

  • work collaboratively with key global stakeholders and environment action groups to drive continual improvements.
  • have excellent data analysis and interpretation skills with the ability to present and explain information and data accurately and clearly.
  • have the ability to work collaboratively and with a range of cultures and levels.
  • be a driven, proactive and communicative influencer.
  • Be conscientious and results-driven with determination to see a task through to completion.
  • Have excellent computer skills including Office 365 / SharePoint / Teams etc.

This exciting role will involve some working globally, meaning there may be some early mornings and late evenings to work with colleagues in other time zones. However, we have a flexible approach to working hours to accommodate this.

We operate hybrid working arrangements. You have the ability to work from home or office, with visits to office for team working/meetings as required.

This is a fantastic opportunity to carve out a new and exciting role. You will have the opportunity to develop within the role, and we will provide necessary training and support as required.

Rewards and benefits

We will support you to be at your best in work and to live well outside of it. In addition to competitive salaries, we offer a world-class, flexible rewards package, featuring family-friendly and planet-friendly benefits including:

  • Group personal pension scheme
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • Life assurance up to 4 x annual salary
  • Private medical and Permanent Health Insurance
