We are seeking a Band 5 OT to work as part of our mental health rehabilitation OT service based in Surrey.

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Band 5 Occupational Therapist to join the team at Horton Rehabilitation Service. Based in Epsom, Surrey, Horton Rehabilitation Service provides inpatient rehabilitation to adults with complex and enduring mental health.

The hospital is situated within spacious grounds and is a short distance from Epsom Town providing good transport links, free onsite parking and access to local amenities.

The service consists of 4 ward wards, 2 High Dependency wards, 1 managed access unit and 1 open rehabilitation ward. We provide a service to people across London and and the surrounding area who have a serious and ensuring mental illness and require support to enable them to live in the community.

Newly qualified OTs are welcome to apply and will be supported in their role. We recognise that the step between student and professional needs support so we have invested fully in our Band 5s development through robust supervision, a preceptorship programme and internal training. Success at preceptorship enables them to then be an educator for OT students. Career development opportunities are available both with mental health rehabilitation and CNWL as a whole.

The successful candidates will:

Be motivated, energetic and a flexible team player with excellent communication skills
Be able to use initiative and have some responsibilities towards the management of the day treatment programme.
Demonstrate an interest and participation in evidence -based practice and professional development and working with recovery principles.
Be familiar with the MOHO and other evidence- based assessment tools in order to establish a baseline functional assessment from which recommendations can determine further ongoing care and treatment to enable optimum functioning.

In addition, the post holder would support the provision of Occupational Therapy at the onsite Recovery Centre. There is also the opportunity to work alongside the Trust’s Recovery and Wellbeing College, liaising with colleagues from the College, co-facilitating courses with peer trainers. Ensuring the provision of a programme of courses onsite, as part of the Horton Spoke.

This enables us to invest in the development of our staff by providing excellent internal training as well as commissioning specialised external training and providing quality supervision; including a robust preceptorship programme. OT in CNWL is very fortunate in having a long-established professional structure and this includes an AHP director, Trust wide Professional Head of OT, borough and specialist Head OTs. This has the huge benefit of ensuring representation of our profession at all levels - both strategically and operationally.

The post holder will provide specialist, culturally appropriate, evidence based occupational therapy assessments for service users in order to establish baseline functional assessment from which recommendations can determine further on-going care and treatment, to enable optimum functioning and meet their occupational needs.

To plan, implement and review individually tailored programmes of intervention using individual and group work approaches.

To determine the impact of mental and physical conditions on service user’s functional ability and undertake assessment/make recommendations with regards to the provision of equipment/aids and adaptations.

To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions against clear aims, objectives and outcome measures in line with evidence-based practice and in conjunction with service users, carers and other professionals.

To establish and maintain effective communication networks with service users, with complex learning, emotional and behavioural needs, their carers, other professionals and agencies in order to ensure a comprehensive and consistent approach to client care

To provide full vocational needs assessment, advice and on-going intervention related to an individual’s vocational needs.
To select and use validated standardised assessment tools routinely and in practice, exhibiting clinical reasoning skills; to include the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) assessments.
To apply clinical knowledge and skills to carry out evidence based occupational therapy interventions, both individual and in groups, which are underpinned by relevant theoretical approaches and in line with the Trust’s Research and Development Strategy.
To plan, implement and review individually tailored programmes of intervention using individual and group work approaches.
To support service users and colleagues to ensure that care plans are developed in partnership with the individual and that they reflect ‘recovery goals’. These should be strengths-based and oriented towards reinforcing a positive identity and developing valued social roles.
To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions against clear aims, objectives and outcome measures in line with evidence based practice and in conjunction with service users, carers and other professionals.
To establish links with the CNWL Recovery College and work within the local spoke.
To be aware of medication issues in line with the CNWL OT Medication Management guidelines.
To proactively undertake and ensure rigorous risk assessment & risk management strategies are applied. To ensure maximum ‘risk tolerance’ facilitates the individual’s recovery, in line with risk policies and local guidelines.
To work in partnership with other agencies including MAPPA and MARAC.
For Practitioners to be aware of and sensitive to the safeguarding needs of children and adults in their work, and knowledgeable both about potential indicators of abuse or neglect and about what to do if they had concerns about a child's or adult's welfare.
To identify carers needs in line with CPA policy and national requirements.
To support service users in relation to their physical health, employment, and housing and welfare benefits issues; referring to specialist provider services as necessary.
To provide OT consultation to other professionals within the team.
To provide all service users on caseload with a full adult mental health assessment and offer regular monitoring of mental state.
To facilitate effective links with community resources in order that a socially inclusive focus towards treatment and discharge planning is maintained.
To facilitate smooth transitions between the ward and community settings for service users being discharged from the ward.
