Following the commencement of the Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) initiative in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICS, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an existing Band 6 or experienced Band 5 OT to join our Cardiology, Surgery and Critical Care OT Team. You will have the opportunity to work in a forward thinking and dynamic team across a variety of specialist clinical areas.
We are looking for a highly motivated OT, committed to professional development and providing high quality, timely and effective services. You will have strong clinical assessment, intervention, activity analysis and clinical reasoning skills.
The clinical focus will be within thoracic surgery: specific experience of working with surgical patients would be an advantage, as well as work across cancer pathways. You will also work within cardiac, urology and colorectal surgery, infectious diseases and critical care, requiring a flexible and adaptive approach.
You will have excellent core OT skills in assessment and diverse interventions including rehab, seating, positioning, splinting and discharge planning. You will work with complex patients such as those with hypoxic brain injuries, stroke or delirium: a good understanding of stroke and/or neurology assessments and interventions is desirable but not essential.
As part of the national initiative, you will supervise the TLHC generic band 4 assistant practitioner. You will also participate in evaluation of the TLHC OT service, supported by band 7s.
Main duties of the job

- Work as part of multidisciplinary teams in all clinical areas
- Assess and treat patients as appropriate in the relevant areas
- Rehabilitation of acute and critical care patients
- Management of complex cases and discharges
- Communicate effectively with staff and patients – including patients who may have communication difficulties or English as a second language
- Provide clinical support to members of the team
- Provide supervision to more junior staff (including Band 5, support workers and students)
- Support student placements within the team and provide formal and informal training
- Deputise for the Band 7 as appropriate
- Work flexibly - including weekend rota
- Work alongside the band 7’s and seniors in the team to develop the service in line with evidence based practice

The Occupational Therapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 600 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post is a permanent part-time role consisting of 18.75 hours.
For the needs of the service, working days would ideally be Wed/Thurs/Fri but there may be flexibility around this.
A willingness to learn and develop further, both clinically and professionally is essential. You must be open to finding innovative new ways of working and be flexible, dynamic and forward thinking. Strong and emerging leadership qualities are also essential.
You will be working as part of large inter and multi-professional teams who will give support and training to develop in this role to reach their full potential.

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
- HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist
- Able to maintain a professional portfolio for CPD, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working within an acute inpatient setting
- Experience of using evidenced based practice to inform own practice and that of others
Communication and relationship skills
Essential criteria
- Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills
- Able to communicate patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors.
- Able to effectively use a range of written and verbal communication skills with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating eg. Patients may be dysphasic, deaf, who may be unable to accept diagnosis or have terminal illness
Analytical and judgement skills
Essential criteria
- Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of junior OT staff and support staff
- Risk assessment skills for the safe management and discharge of complex wheelchair patients
- Independently work through the OT process with patients requiring a permanent wheelchair
Planning and organisation skills
Essential criteria
- Able to plan own clinical activity to meet clinical needs of patients when demand exceeds capacity
- Able to make judgements about the prioritising of caseloads when demand exceeds capacity and to support junior and support staff in this process
Physical skills
Essential criteria
- Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes safe wheelchair positioning, maximising patient ability

- Flexibility to work elsewhere in Therapies or as required across both campuses
- Flexible working schedules including participation in weekend rosters where required
