I am excited to be advertising for one Band 6 Occupational Therapists to join our established multi-disciplinary team working in the Acute Women’s Service at the Becklin Centre. This is made up of two women’s acute wards.
You will be part of an OT provision which consists of one Band 6 OT, one Band 5 OT, one OTA, and an activity co-ordinator per ward.
We are looking for a skilled, compassionate, and motivated Occupational Therapist who have the desire to work with individuals experiencing an acute episode in their mental health.
You will be supported in your personal and professional development via clinical supervision, appraisal, training and other Continuing Professional Development opportunities.
The post holder will have an active role in shaping and evaluating the OT Pathway across our Acute Inpatient Service. As a service we are in the process of reinitiating the use of MOHO to aid our assessment and screening process. The post holder will bring valued experience and skills to our teams and have the opportunity to share their specialist knowledge in our OT development sessions. We are keen to develop individual staff as well as the OT pathway as a whole and your own individual development needs will be discussed as part of a yearly appraisal.
Whilst the posts are ward based, you will have close links with the Occupational Therapy Team and will work to provide a 7 day service.

Working within the MDT to provide assessment, treatment, and discharge planning. Utilising Occupational Therapy theory and evidence-based practice to provide effective treatment to individuals admitted to the ward. Working autonomously and providing specialist assessments which will form part of team formulations and treatment decisions, and through the use of person-centred interventions enable recovery and support effective discharge from hospital.
In addition to providing 1:1 assessments the post holder will aim to lead on the therapeutic group programme establishing an effective group timetable that facilitates the growth of functional and social skills.
Contribute to on-going service development within the wider OT team. Including supervising of band 5 Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants within the women’s service, delegating responsibilities where appropriate.
This role will be based at either ward 1 or 5 of the Becklin centre. These are both 22 bedded wards for people who present with acute and complex mental health difficulties. Providing 24 hour care to manage risk and promote recovery for clients who have experienced deterioration in their mental state. As well as working alongside an established ward team, you will have opportunity to liaise and network with other AHP’s, including: Dietetics, Physio and SALT.

Within the Trust
- Ensure effective communication with the team and Band 6 team members during the planning, implementation and evaluations of care.
- Close liaison with other members of the team providing regular updates of client work.
- Participate in managerial supervision and participate in performance review/PDP with identified supervisor
- Participate in clinical supervision as per Trust Policy.

- Participate in training/education to other members of Acute Inpatient Services.

- Able to adapt to barriers in communication that Service Users may present with e.g. emotional, psychological and physical, utilising a high level of expertise in communication skills or seek support/supervision as required
- Support the co-ordination of clinical care within the inpatient units ensure key working teams work within the defined care pathway
- Ensure the diverse needs of our service users and those who come into contact with our services are considered and supported
- Adhere to all professional and Trust policies including the reporting of Trust incidents, complaints procedure and information governance.

- Provide advice, support and information to service users and carers.
- Liaise with other agencies, providers, service users/carers during the planning implementation and evaluations of care.
- With senior staff and on occasion without senior members, participate in training/education to service users/carers and other teams in the LYPFT and Voluntary Sector organisations who want to know about Acute Inpatient Services
- Maintain and produce detailed contemporaneous and accurate records and reports at all times in accordance with agreed procedures.
- Assist with data collection and the daily completion of statistical information
- Use of computer to aid work.
- Contribute data for local performance indicators.
- Follow integrated care pathways as specified for Acute Inpatient Services and to report on variances and feedback as necessary.
- Registered Occupational Therapist.
- Post qualifying experience and knowledge of the problems and difficulties experienced by people with mental health illness.
- Knowledge to advise and support local authority staff and other professionals in the day service setting in relation to health and recovery related issues.
- Insight into multi-disciplinary working including working with the voluntary sector.
- Demonstrate knowledge in person centred approaches and awareness of legislation that affects delivery of health care in mental health services.
- Demonstrates experience in assessing and formulating treatment plans that are recovery focused.
- Demonstrates importance of sound evidence based occupational therapeutic health interventions when delivering/initiating direct care work
- Experience in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care to meet service user needs.
- Knowledge of standard care plan and CPA framework
- Has a good working knowledge of psychological approaches in mental health
- Has an understanding of the relevant skills required and a commitment to developing skills in psychological thinking and interventions appropriate to skill level and in line with the service integrated care pathways
- Willing to develop skills and knowledge in formulation and to work under supervision where required developing collaborative formulations with service users and families
- Will engage in the learning of students, professionals, carers and service users.
- Will support and supervise volunteers that work in the service
- Engages in partnerships with 3rdsector organisations, not just within the service but with all organisations that interface with the care of our service users including primary care (and other local agencies). To advise on mental health issues and support as necessary

- Has experience of working with diverse populations and values the work associated to promoting diversity and social inclusion
- Seek advice from the Band 7 staff or senior colleagues on clinical decisions that necessitates further/different health interventions.
- Prioritise Acute Inpatient actions for individuals on a daily basis
- Involved in the risk assessment of individuals in conjunction with other members of the team, service users and their carers. They will ensure appropriate plans of action are in place to manage identified risks.
- Will cover and support team members during times of annual leave or unexpected leave of absences.

- In conjunction with the Ward Staff and under the supervision of the Band 7 staff or other senior colleagues to provide evidence based assessments and intervention (directly or indirectly) that improves the quality of life of service users requiring support to optimise their recovery.
- Able to use the MOHOST as a screening tool and direct others in the use of the assessment
- Maintain a commitment to person centred care and to promote the use of the recovery model where appropriate engaging service users in all aspects of their care.
- Undertake direct clinical treatment interventions as required by the service user in differing settings.
- Collaborate with outside agencies to ensure care packages are in line with all agencies policies and procedures and current legislations.
- Promote social inclusion and diversity for clients by coordinating/facilitating and supporting access to a variety of community based opportunities including work, social groups, education, spiritual pursuits, leisure activities to ensure holistic wellbeing.
- Promote the physical health and wellbeing of clients by supporting assessment and interventions that facilitates access to relevant screening and information around therapeutic activity, medication, diet, nutrition, exercise, sensible drinking and smoking cessation
- To act at all times with courtesy towards Service user’s, relatives and other visitors to the unit and refer them to the senior team members as appropriate

- To make effective use of all available resources under the guidance of the Clinical Team Manager.
- Adhere to Trust financial instructions e.g.: mileage and expenses claims, timely submission of attendance sheets and activity recording.
- In liaison with the ward administrator maintain stock of clinical supplies as appropriate for care delivery
- Take personal responsibility in agreement with your line manager for your own personal development by ensuring that continuous professional development remains a priority.
- Provide supervision and appraisals for designated staff.

- In conjunction with line manager provide cover for the team caseload for holidays and sickness if required
- Assist in the mentorship and preceptorship of OTs.
- Provide supervision and support to volunteers working within the service.
- Participate in the provision of an effective induction programme for new staff to achieve a clear awareness of roles and responsibilities, and operational policies and procedures
- Responsible for organising time management of their workload as an individual practitioner.
- Will work in conjunction with the Band 7 OT and senior colleagues within the team and as independent practitioners on cases as appropriately identified by the multi-disciplinary team.
