CDC Office and Location: A training opportunity is currently available in the U.S. National Authority for Containment of Poliovirus (U.S. NAC) within the Office of Readiness and Response (ORR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The U.S. NAC is responsible for the management of a national-level survey of facilities working with poliovirus infectious and potentially infectious materials, and implementation of poliovirus containment activities in the United States.

Research Project: This fellowship with the U.S. NAC will provide an opportunity to learn about public health and will focus on customer support for the National Inventory for Poliovirus Containment survey. Under the guidance of the National Survey Manager, the fellow will engage in oral and written communication with U.S. laboratory facilities to 1) prepare for enrollment in the survey including call scheduling, 2) resolve survey related questions from biosafety personnel and survey participants, 3) document survey participation justifications in a NAC database, and 3) obtain needed documentation of material destruction and other poliovirus-relevant inventory changes. The fellow will also assist with data management, development of data visualization products (e.g., Power BI dashboard and report graphics), survey outreach, and preparing written documentation of NAC operational processes and procedures. The fellowship is a limited 12-month term beginning July 5, 2023.

Learning Objectives: This fellowship offers an opportunity to learn about and gain hands-on experience in the following activities:

  • Providing customer support to individuals seeking assistance related to the U.S. National Inventory for Poliovirus Containment
  • Optimizing and analyzing NAC survey data (e.g., characterizations, trends, projections, inconsistencies)
  • Identifying and utilizing qualitative and quantitative data for use in assessing the progress of poliovirus containment in the United States
  • Preparing visual representations of survey data in traditional and novel ways
  • Documenting processes and procedures for existing NAC survey team activities (e.g., inactivating, importing, and reimporting surveys)

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 5, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
