Job description
As a Network Engineer working in the Network Proactive Support Services (NPSS) team, you provide Cisco network engineering support to the customer. Carrying out Cisco lifecycle engineering tasks such as security patching and device IOS upgrades.
Your goal is to help ensure the customers networks are secure and remain protected against both internal and external threats and vulnerabilities.
You report to the on-site Service Delivery Manager (SDM).
Responsibilities
- Complete work streams and daily tasks as directed by the SDM.
- Carry out designated tasks under limited supervision and able use own discretion in resolving problems or dealing with customer queries.
- Provide triage service for Cisco PSIRT releases, identifying potential threats to the customers networks and ensuring customer stakeholders are updated accordingly.
- Provide guidance to the customer on how best to mitigate risks associated with Cisco PSIRT releases and participate in upgrade planning sessions with both Cisco and the customer.
- Liaise with Cisco and the customer to help draft and present software recommendation reports, configuration best practice reports and network compliance reports.
- Assist with the planning of device upgrade programmes ensuring customer change management processes are adhered to.
- Carry out device upgrades and application patching in line with Cisco best practices, ensuring customer disruption is minimised and service availability is maximised.
- Compile NPPS reporting packs for customer monthly and quarterly service reviews and provide NPSS SME guidance at the service review meetings.
- Display effective troubleshooting techniques to resolve or determine where issues may exist prior to escalating to Level 3 Engineers or engaging vendor technical assistance as required.
- Maintain vendor specialisations and accreditations as directed by management, ensuring exams are completed within the timescales given.
- Accurately record activities and change documentation, ensuring these are clearly written using the relevant documentation and tools.
- Complete other tasks as directed that fall within the scope of your technical capabilities and experience.
Requirements
Experience
- A minimum of 5 (preferably 7) years relevant engineering experience in a project engineering environment or similar technical role.
- Evidence of managing, configuring and troubleshooting multiple technology pillars across a wide range of different customer environments (e.g. Voice, WAN, LAN, DC and Security deployments).

- CCNA/CCNP
- ITIL Foundation
- MCSA
- JNCIA
- Meraki CMNA
Skills and Attributes
- Excellent spoken and written English, able to clearly articulate issues and updates to customers and peers alike.
- Applies due diligence and demonstrates clear attention to detail in all aspects of working engagements.
- Well organised, able to prioritise multiple work streams and has the common sense to escalate when workloads may pose a risk to customer delivery and SLA’s.
- Demonstrates a clear ability to listen and take in new information, able interpret instructions from peers and management to ensure work streams are carried out successfully.
- Able to work well under pressure, doesn’t get flustered and has a clear understanding of their own abilities.
Desirable Academic Qualifications
- GCSE Grade’s A - D in English, Math’s and a science or IT/Electronics subject.
- NVQ L2.
- BTEC Diploma L2.
Developed Vetting clearance essential, ideal person is someone who works in the building with the clearance already
