An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Multi-Skilled Apprentice in our Starrett Precision Optical (SPO) department. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone interesting in a career in Engineering. You will undertake a Modern Apprenticeship over 5 years, gaining a formal qualification at the end of your apprenticeship.

The Role
During the first year the apprentice will work at our site in Jedburgh, learning what it is like to work for The L. S Starrett Co. Ltd. You will work alongside other engineers who will mentor you during this first year.
Starting your second year you will be registered onto the Modern Apprenticeship programme where you will attend Edinburgh college near Dalkeith or Borders College Galashiels where you will work towards gaining your SVQ level 2 qualification in Performing Engineering Operations in Mechanical Engineering plus a relative National certificate from the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA).
The remaining three years will be back at the company gaining a discipline specific SVQ level 3 in Engineering plus a Higher National Certificate through college attendance via a day release programme of study and examination.
The successful individual will work closely alongside Starrett engineers learning specific skills in Wiring, Turning, Milling, Grinding, Fitting and assembly, building and machining of parts, for the Optical Projectors manufactured in Jedburgh. The purpose of this opportunity is to build on succession planning for The L. S. Starrett Co. Ltd with the ultimate aim of a position at the end of the apprenticeship.
The training will take the form of a Modern Apprenticeship (5 Years) and will lead to a formal qualification of SVQ level 2 and 3, NC with a possibility of then progressing to a HNC level on successful completion of the NC.
Main Duties
Main duties will be to learn how to safely setup and operate machinery, wiring components, building components and machining parts. You will also be expected to carry out fitting duties along with precision assembly of components and equipment. This will involve reading and understanding technical drawings and documentation.
You will be expected to contribute to regular progress reviews both at college and in the factory, all opinions are valid and expected. Where possible, suggest ways of improving methods and processes.
You will work as part of a team and learn different methods of manufacturing from your colleagues e.g. electrical wiring, turning milling grinding, measuring and marking out, etc..
You will work within Company Health, Safety and Environmental standards. Representing the company and maintaining its reputation.
During your apprenticeship your program will be:
1st year of the apprenticeship will be to familiarise yourself working at The L. S Starrett Co. Ltd where, you will work alongside qualified engineers on various projects.
2nd year of the apprenticeship you will be registered onto the sector skills council modern apprenticeship Engineering level 3 programme where you will attend college 4 days per week to attain Performing Engineering Operations SVQ Level 2 (SCQF Level 5) and a Relevant National Certificate from SQA. (SCQF level 6)
3rd to 5th year you will attend your work place to attain a relevant SVQ Level 3 (Engineering Manufacture (Fitting and Assembly) plus one day per week over 2 years to attain a relevant HNC.

Our Ideal Candidate
You will be a honest, reliable, hard-working individual who is up for a challenge and enjoys working with others and gaining success.
Candidates would also benefit from having a minimum of 4 National 5’s (or Equivalent) or above such as Maths/ English/ Computer Studies/Physics or Tech Studies and/or a relevant NC qualification. Excellent communication skills with the ability to use your own initiative in problem solving, being part of a team and having a strong drive to succeed are all essential.
What we offer:
You will normally work 37.5 hours per week, Monday – Friday, although some flexibility out with these times may be required.

Salary in accordance with National Minimum Wage.
