Our team defines our customer-facing mobile data services, how those services should work, and how they should be configured. To achieve this, the team designs for platforms with names known to the industry as SGW, PGW, DNS, Gi LAN and CGNAT Firewall (explained below), plus others.
What I’ll be doing – your accountabilities
- Author design documents (such as High Level or Low Level Designs, configuration, or sequence flows).
- Be a backup for at least one other service or platform, to ensure that there are no single points of failure amongst our design cover.
- Liaise with vendors and suppliers.
- Analyse logs and packet traces to identify the cause of issues.
- Measure the capacity and traffic profiles of services and platforms to ensure that our network can serve our customers well.
- Provide ad-hoc consultancy to other teams and business units based on your specialist knowledge of our services – this could be to any stakeholder within the business.
- Attend and feedback on a series of standard meetings & forums including Project Meetings, Design Review Meetings, and Post Implementation Reviews.
- You could be working on a number of platforms such as SGW (Serving Gateway), PGW (Packet Data Network Gateway), DNS (Domain Name System), Gi Lan (Internet traffic optimisation platforms), or CGNAT (Carrier Grade Network Address Translation).
Skills & Experience Required
- You’ll have the desire and ability to understand how a technical system works underneath, and put this to use in designing new services and platforms to perform optimally.
- You can express your thoughts clearly and concisely in writing, and are thoughtful towards the types of audiences that will be reading your documentation. Often, to convey a complex technical interaction accurately, drawing diagrams will be necessary. Use Cases, Sequence Flows, Flow Charts & Timelines are some examples of what might be needed.
- You’re able to verbally communicate complex issues clearly and concisely, including to non-technical people.
- You will be expected to keep up-to-date with big industry changes at a high level. Over the next couple of years this will cover 3GPP releases 16 & 17, cloud computing (Openstack/Docker/Kubernetes/Microservices), web and internet technologies. You don’t need to know any of these in full depth, unless it’s important for what you do.
- Multiple years designing and/or operating a component within the 3GPP 4G packet core, such as MME, SGW, PGW, PCRF, Gi Lan, or ePDG.
- Ability to build business relationships, negotiating what works for both parties, in a collaborative approach.
- As someone in a more senior grade, you’ll have experience of coaching and able to support the development of Network Design Professionals and Apprentices within the team.
