The role
The role of the Middleware Manager is to lead a team and suppliers in the development and support of Middleware and Integration solutions, including API’s, EDI, ETL and data interfaces, and data provision for Marketing technology applications as required by the Business, and ensure these are delivered on time and on budget, and in line with agreed technical standards and company policies.
This permanent role is based upon 40hrs/week between Monday and Friday, operating on a hybrid basis, to include time spent onsite at our central offices in Letchworth as well as other ETEL locations nationally as required by the business.
Key accountabilities
Team Management
- Lead our Middleware team, ensuring they fully engage in projects and contribute to the success of the Technology department, and align to the broader company objectives.
- Review and develop the skills and capabilities of the team to meet the needs of the business.
- Manage all work into the Middleware team. Including prioritisation, work assignment and the full development lifecycle including Requirements, Detailed Design, Build, System Testing and transition to Production.
- Implement Agile ways of working and DevOps frameworks and ensure team processes, task management, roles and responsibilities align to these methodologies.
- Build a culture of continuous improvement across the team including improvements to software development methods, improvements to the delivery speed and quality, and improving team skills and learning.
Stakeholder Management
- Develop productive relationships with Technology and Business leadership and influence how Middleware solutions can continue to support the strategic objectives.
- Work closely with the Architecture team to define and manage Middleware related product roadmaps and associated tooling to manage capacity, platform performance and alerting.
- Manage relationships with software vendors and service providers to ensure they cost-effectively meet the needs of the organisation.
- Engage with the relevant Data Security, Regulatory and Legislative policy subject experts across the business to understand and implement compliance requirements, i.e. GDPR, PII.
Technical Expertise
- Be the Subject Matter Expert in our Middleware and associated technologies and in the use of DevOps for work management and development pipelines.
- Ensure development standards are documented, maintained, and are applied to both internal and externally led development activity.
- Ensure that the appropriate environments and processes are in place to enable all development and testing to be carried out without impacting live environments.
- Ensure that developed solutions are robustly tested before being deployed in compliance with current Test standards.
Skills & experience
- Strong communication skills with a proven ability to understand key concepts and communicate effectively with technical staff, business stakeholders and senior management.
- Proven ability to collaborate, build relationships and influence individuals at all levels, including external vendors and service providers.
- Strong organisational skills, the ability to perform under pressure and management of multiple priorities with competing demands for resources.
- Strong analytical, data-processing and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in process formulation and improvement.
The person must have in-depth knowledge and experience of the following:
- Middleware and Integration platforms, applications, and service and support models.
- Data processing, analysis and quality management tools.
- Development and implementation of processes and policies.
- Agile development, and DevOps principles and frameworks.
The person is required to have a good working knowledge of the following:
- API’s, EDI, ETL, CRM & Marketing, Databases and DevOps

Education and Professional experience
- Minimum of Degree level.
- Relevant commercial and industry experience will be considered over a degree.
- Experience managing in an organisation using agile development methodologies.
- Experience of service-oriented architecture, microservices or similar development experience.
- Experience across a range of other IT functional disciplines will be of beneficial, including:
- Requirements capture
- Technical Analysis
- Solution Design
- Project Management
- IT Operations
- Service Transition
- IT Security
- Proven experience in team management, process improvement, solution delivery and support responsibilities.
- Full UK Cat B drivers license very beneficial
