What will you be doing?
We have an exciting opportunity for a Metrology Engineering Scientist to join the GTIG (Global Technology Innovation Group) Metrology team. This is a team of subject matter experts in existing and emerging lens designs and test methods within the Operations branch of CooperVision. In this role you will take technical ownership of global activities to standardise current measurement methodologies and support the replacement of obsolete equipment within the manufacturing environment. You will execute trials and convey results appropriately, including via presentations and formal engineering reports.
This role also includes participation in the completion of GTIG and Manufacturing led projects, transferring metrology equipment and test methods from R&D into manufacturing, ensuring that the measurement methods are capable and robust.

What are we looking for?
- 2 – 5 years in a Metrology focussed Science role
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in physics or related discipline highly desirable
- Understanding of the principles behind metrology systems.
- Knowledge of Metrology Validation
- Understanding of the Uncertainty of Measurement including common contributing factors.
- Basic understanding of optical and linear measurement systems such as interferometers, focimeters, CMM, shadowgraphs, microscopes and micrometre’s.
- Data analysis techniques, manual and software driven including Excel, Minitab, Matlab or other applicable packages.
- Technical report writing.
- Understanding of geometric and physical optics
- Six Sigma techniques
- Understanding of ISO standards
- Ideally some knowledge of medical device or pharmaceuticals relevant to their area of expertise but essential you have experience in a regulated industry. Repeatability and Reliability Studies.

Travel Requirements :
The role involves frequent travel to local (UK) sites and occasional travel to European CooperVision sites and suppliers. As a member of a global department international travel may also be required from time to time but this would be rare.

Essential responsibilities:
- Typically functioning as a team member, assisting with the development of timelines for delivery, communicating back on progress and ensuring quality of the deliverable.
- Good understanding of contact lens manufacture including process control and manufacturing techniques.
- To participate in problem solving activities and support investigations. Establish aims and areas of analysis, or to undertake actions using advanced investigational techniques.
- Follow up trials and investigations where there are unexpected outcomes and to determine the root cause of these and their impact on the business.
- Able to communicate effectively within the discipline and activities being supported.
- Conduct training for implementation of new/upgraded measurement methods and systems.
- Lead small teams in the use of Continuous Improvement Tool and Techniques within the department.
- Ability to keep abreast of new developments within the contact lens industry.
- Good understanding of Quality Assurance and Quality Control systems, medical device/pharmaceutical, FDA, GAMP, ISO and International regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with Metrology Technicians, clearly explaining needs for testing and expected results.
- Participate in knowledge transfer to and from applicable support groups.
- Lead small teams in the use of Continuous Improvement Tool and Techniques within the department.
- Work with QA representatives to raise Engineering Change Orders, complete Initial Change Assessments, and lead Risk Assessments with input from Subject Matter Experts.
- Initiate contact with Regulatory team to conduct RAID assessments and ensure completion of documentation required for compliant change control.
- To support and understand metrology equipment design and methodology.
- To support the development of internal requirements for metrology, based on an understanding of external standards.
- Able to identify gaps in internal methodologies against external standards, or potential gaps where there is possible ambiguity.
- Derivation of new measurement techniques and methods where appropriate
- Identify new off the shelf metrology solutions and their application to our business. Introduce into a production environment with appropriate documentation and specifications.
- Production of documentation/training material is in a manner that supports reproducible measurements.
- Investigate metrology faults arising from equipment malfunctions and if these issues are systemic or operational.
- Liaise with other departments on providing metrology support.
- Obtain quotes and follow CV Financial, Procurement and Asset processes to raise purchase orders and fulfilling incoming equipment requirements.
