Sheffield Forgemasters is an iconic heavy engineering company which is capable of producing the largest and most technically challenging cast and forged steel components in the world from its manufacturing facilities in Sheffield.
In 2021 the business was acquired by the UK Ministry of Defence so as to secure its role as a critical supplier to the next generation of UK defence programmes, and currently embarking upon a substantial programme of capital investment to modernise its plant and equipment over the next 10 years.
We currently have an opportunity within the Melt Shop department.
The successful applicant will work within the melting team, the operative must ensure pit side tasks are carried out effectively, ensuring both base plates and moulds are set correctly.
You will work as part of a team to manufacture bespoke ingots between 1.5-287 tonnes and be exposed to multi-ladle casting 600+ tonnes within the Foundry.
Working as a production operative in partnership with engineering and technical stakeholders you will be instrumental in the delivery of a high integrity steel grades.
There are also opportunities to develop and progress to working on our Electric Arc Furnace and Secondary Steel Making units.

The main duties of the role are as follows:
Primary steelmaking operations involving our 105 tonne Electric Arc Furnace
Secondary steelmaking operations involving our VAD/VOD/Ladle Furnace
General crane driving duties
Ladle set up and preparation
Pitside configuration
Maintaining a high level of H&S for themselves & others keeping in line with the companies H&S policy
Adhering to standard process instructions
Preparing our ladle fleet to enable successful pouring of liquid steel into ingot moulds
Our ideal candidate will have:
Previous experience of working in an engineering or manufacturing environment, with heavy engineering experience being advantageous
Previous experience of an Electric arc furnace would be beneficial but not essential
Crane driving & slinging experience
Strong attention to detail
Willingness to learn and gain new skills
Days/Hours of Work:
Pattern of Work: Days and nights
Days – Monday to Wednesday 06:00-18:00 and Thursday 06:00-14:00
Nights - Monday to Wednesday 18:00-06:00
This will equate to average of 40 hours per week.
