The Medicines Management Technicians work closely with the Pharmacist and with the ward teams. After the great success of the year 1 Dedicated Ward Pharmacy Service (DWP), we are excited to now seek out for more Pharmacy Technicians to implement and support with the next phase of the DWP service.

If you are a Pharmacy Technician working in another sector and are keen for a new clinical challenge with a direct patient facing role, but you don't quite meet our criteria, we offer a band 4-5 progression programme at NGH, which you may be eligible for. As a department we are keen to support and develop our Pharmacy Technicians through their careers. To be responsible for the provision of the patients’ own medicines to assigned wards.

This will include daily visits, drug history taking, assessment of patients’ own medicines and managing storage systems for this purpose.

To participate in the work of the Pharmacy Service by using technical skills. The technical aspects of medicine supply are organised and managed by technical staff. Those aspects of work with a professional dimension will require pharmacists’ supervision.

To assist Senior Technicians to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients in the Directorate.

To assist in the provision of ward-based activities.

This will include the following tasks:
To assist the Clinical Pharmacists in identifying new patients and taking accurate patient medication histories on admission.

To assist in the maintenance of the Patients’ Own Medicines Scheme by promoting the service both within the Trust and externally, as well as encouraging patients to bring their own medicines into hospital from home.

To assess patients’ own medicines for suitability for use, following the Trust procedure.

To counsel patients on their medication.

To ensure information is effectively communicated to the Clinical

Pharmacists.

To manage medicine supply on assigned wards.

To ensure that patients’ own medicines are transferred with the patient.

To assist in the provision of medicines for the treatment of patients.

This will include the following tasks:
To accurately and promptly dispense prescriptions for in-patients,out-patients, day-patients and leave/discharge patients.

To issue dispensed medicines to patients and confirm that they know how to use them.

To supply Controlled Drugs and keep appropriate records.

To undertake ‘final-checking’ according to a defined policy when competence has been proven.

To undertake ‘Enhanced Patient Counselling’ following appropriate training.

If required, to take part in the staff rotation system and undertake duties elsewhere in the Pharmacy to maintain the service.

If required, to issue and/or ‘top-up’ supplies of stock preparations for wards, departments and other areas.

To assist the Principal/Advanced Pharmacy Technicians in co-ordinating the Medicine Management workload.

This will include the following tasks:
To manage the Medicines Management Assistants (MMA)

To manage the day to day workload and maintain/review the required data collection

To perform appraisals and 1-1s to delegated staff in accordance with Trust policies.

To provide sickness and performance monitoring to delegated staff.

To use technical and pharmaceutical skills to ensure control, security, quality and value for money of medicines.

This will include the following tasks:
To assist in maintaining appropriate storage and stock levels of medicines in Pharmacy departments to ensure quality, potency and economy.

To help to maintain an accurate computerised pharmacy stock control system.

To assess and return medicines for re-use in accordance with the departmental policy.

To maintain necessary records. If required, to collate information and present reports.

To use technical and pharmaceutical skills to prepare medicines in an acceptable form for patients.

This will include the following tasks:
To extemporaneously constitute and prepare medicinal products for individual patients.

To assist in the manufacture of medicinal products in accordance with local procedures and safe systems of work.

To assist in the maintenance of a clean and efficient environment suitable for the handling and compounding of medicinal substances; proper cleaning, maintenance and use of equipment.

To assist in Directorate responsibilities.

This will include the following tasks:
To assist with the production of quarterly medicine expenditure reports

To assist in audit projects within the Directorate

To assist in the production of monthly MMT activity reports

To assist with producing and reviewing SOPs

Other Duties.

This will include the following tasks:
To deputise for Senior Pharmacy Technicians, when necessary.

To train pharmacy and other staff.

To undertake NVQ Assessor duties (A1), if appropriate.

To undertake other duties elsewhere in the locality.
