The incumbent performs high complexity laboratory functions to obtain data for use in infectious disease and/ histocompatibility evaluations of potential deceased and living donors for the purpose of transplantation.
Essential Job Functions:
- The incumbent performs high-complexity laboratory testing:
- Prepares specimens, reagents, and instrumentation for testing and/or storage
- Maintains patient and donor confidentiality per HIPAA requirements and Gift of Life Michigan policy
- Maintains accurate documentation of all laboratory responsibilities
- Responsible for performing, analyzing, and reporting results for the following tests according to established procedures (may also assist in the interpretation of test results):
- Immunohematology (ABO typing)
- Hemoglobin A1C testing
- Manual EIA testing
- Nucleic acid testing
- Chemiluminescence
- Histocompatibility testing (HLA typing)
- Flow cytometric crossmatching
- Solid-phase antibody testing
- Point of care testing (Urinalysis, CBC, Coagulation, and Blood chemistry)
- Identifies and troubleshoots factors that may adversely impact test performance or reporting of test results
- Performs quality control measures
- Responsible for initial review of results and release of preliminary reports
- May be responsible for secondary review of results and release of final results as indicated by experience
- Participates in external proficiency testing programs
- Participates in the laboratory and Gift of Life Michigan quality assurance programs
- Assists in providing 24/7/365 availability of essential laboratory services for deceased donor organ procurement. Must be available on assigned days/nights outside regular work hours to take call and perform testing and reporting of results without direct supervision
- Performs preventative and general maintenance for laboratory work areas, equipment, and instrumentation
- Maintains proficiency in all software programs used in the laboratory and/or Gift of Life Michigan
- Maintains inventory of supplies.
- The incumbent must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of 1 year of recent relevant clinical laboratory experience is preferred, but not required.
- Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or equivalent, Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (ABHI), and/or Specialist in Immunology (ASCP) is preferred, but not required.
