Job description
We require a laboratory assistant to join our microbiology team. The post will involve supporting the department in providing diagnostic services and includes include data entry; manual, semi-automated and automated technical procedures; dealing with telephone enquiries; equipment maintenance; stock control; and laboratory waste disposal.
- Maintains awareness of changes and developments within the section/department.
- Receives and handles a wide range of enquiries, in person or by telephone, including matters of a confidential or a sensitive nature.
- Basic communication with patients and staff ensuring compliance with confidentiality rules, data protection act etc.
- Issues results in accordance with departmental SOPs.
- Attends meetings as directed

- Undertakes work according to Standard Operating Procedures.
- Undertakes routine maintenance and troubleshooting of general laboratory equipment.
- Undertakes preparatory work to support complex manual and automated analytical processes.
- Checks all samples before processing for identification, status and suitability for diagnostic investigations
- Undertakes complex manual, semi-automated and automated procedures under indirect supervision.
- Prepares samples for sending to external reference laboratories.
