JOB SUMMARY:
The MA Apprentice is enrolled in a state registered apprenticeship program that will prepare them to become a Medical Assistant – Certified (MA-C). Apprentices are expected to work full time in clinic and log 2000 on-the-job training hours over the 12-15-month program. All clinical skills are taught hands-on under the guidance of a 1:1 coach. Apprentices also complete an online course comprised of textbook readings, discussion posts, skill videos, quizzes, and more, that takes an average of 10 hours per week to complete. The online curriculum must be completed during unpaid time, typically in evenings and on weekends.
After completing the program, the employee will continue to work in one of the organizations clinics as a Medical Assistant - Certified for the agreed 1 to 2 years.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Enrollment in the In-REACH Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program sponsored by Washington Association for Community Health is required.
Skills: Excellent customer service, oral and written communications skills required. Compassion for patients required. Must be able to work well in team environment. Ability to multi-task in fast-paced work environment, with ability to anticipate future needs. Basic computer user skills required. Accurate spelling ability required.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Planning and Prioritizing
1. Plans work around department activity during the shift to optimize productivity.
2. Demonstrates the ability to reprioritize work as needed to support other members of the patient care team.
3. Functions in a self-directed way for routine responsibilities.
Information Gathering
4. Collects and tracks medical records for timely transcription and processing of physician's orders.
5. Gathers and documents vital signs and records in the medical record.
6. Seeks information about the What, Why, How, Where and When of patient care and department activity in order to enhance accuracy and timeliness of information exchange with physician, licensed staff, patients, and families.

7. Uses good judgment in communication of patient needs to other team members.
8. Demonstrates the utilization of critical-thinking skills and the ability to multi-task.
9. Demonstrates initiative to explore, search and ask questions when solutions are difficult to find.

10. Communicates with the Clinic Manager what has been done and what remains to be done throughout the shift.
11. Completes verbal and written communications regarding patients, routine tasks, stocking, and cleaning of the work area.
12. Takes responsibility for using all methods of communication provided to stay informed of organizational activities and communicates own work issues to coworkers.

14. Demonstrates the ability to consistently perform the required skills of a Certified Medical Assistant.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs other non-essential functions as requested.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sitting: 80%. Standing/Walking: 20%.
Occasional lifting/carrying of supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Occasional stooping to retrieve items from lower file drawers.
Frequent reaching/handling to obtain and process documents and work addressograph.
Occasional pushing/pulling of equipment and beds weighing over 100 pounds.
Occasional kneeling/crouching/crawling to assist patient and perform patient care functions.
Constant fingering to write, type and use the phone.
Frequent talking to communicate with other staff and patients.
Constant hearing/seeing to communicate and assist with clerical aspects of patient care.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Location: Inside.
Occasional exposure to wet/humidity from water, steam, pharmaceutical preparations, and body fluids.
Occasional exposure to noise to cause distractions from phone and hospital alarms.
Occasional exposure to fumes and odors from cautery, acetone and body fluids.
Minimal risk of injury due to proximity of moving parts on computer printer, typewriter, and copier.
Minimal exposure to biohazardous materials.
Pay Range:
$16.30-$24.30 Hourly
