Apprentice Mechanical Plant Fitter – 2023 – Doncaster


Our apprenticeship programme is a great opportunity to study towards a college qualification while earning and putting everything you have learnt into action through on-the-job training.


Cementation Skanska are an internationally recognised specialist and one of the UK’s leading piling and foundation contractors. We are experts in all piling techniques, working on multiple projects from buildings to complex infrastructure. Using the latest techniques, our teams are at the forefront of implementing new ideas and technology.


Our workshops have been established in Bentley, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, for almost a century. We provide a huge range of manufacturing, engineering, and maintenance services, using specialist equipment and precision tooling.


The expertise of our teams of mechanical and civil engineers includes production design, fabrication, welding, electrical engineering, hydraulics, and computer numerical control machining.


Based in our Workshops at Bentley, within our seventeen-acre plant and fabrication depot, the role of an Apprentice Plant Fitter will involve working on major foundation plant including the Cementation Skanska piling rig fleet.


Your time will be split between studying at Askham Bryan college, working towards the relevant NVQ qualification, whilst developing new skills in the workplace with on-the-job training.

You will work initially on smaller plant, such as mini-rigs, concrete pumps, generators, up to our large scale equipment - crawler cranes and Piling rigs which can weigh up to 200 tonnes.


What you will learn to do:


  • Maintenance and repair of all mechanical aspects of the plant and equipment within the depot
  • Dealing with ancillary plant items from a mechanical perspective
  • Fixed mechanical installation work
  • Promoting new ideas surrounding mechanical innovation and the development of mechanical and hydraulic systems
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques where required
  • Dismantling components and equipment
  • Diagnose faults on equipment utilising diagnostic technology
  • Checking components for serviceability during overall activities
  • Repairing and modifying mechanical assemblies
  • Assembling mechanical components Checking that completed assemblies comply with specifications
  • Safety, Quality and Sustainability are key to Skanska and successful candidates will be required to demonstrate this within the mechanical role
