Pay: £50,400 - £54,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience
Job type: One-year fixed term: 1 September 2023 – 31 August 2024

Scope and purpose
Working with MEI colleagues you will develop resources, deliver services and coordinate activities to improve Mathematics education for students in schools in England. Your main role will be to design and deliver professional development for teachers of Primary Mathematics with a focus on KS2/3 transition. You will develop MEI’s profile and work in Primary Mathematics more broadly and develop and contribute to projects and services to schools to improve Mathematics curricula and teaching.

As part of our work, MEI is involved in the leadership and management of government-funded programmes to support maths education. We lead the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme and the FE Maths CPD Programme. We are also a lead partner in the government-funded National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics, which coordinates the work of the Maths Hubs Programme.

Main duties and responsibilities
This role will include some or all of the following duties. MEI plays a key role in the leadership of the NCETM and all of our activities to support primary maths education should be consistent with NCETM’s Teaching for Mastery pedagogy and the work of the Maths Hubs.
Contribute to the planning, development and delivery of professional development for Primary teachers.- Develop curricula, teaching and learning resources in Primary Mathematics, including cross-curricula uses of mathematics.
- Develop contacts and relationships in the Primary sector and identify opportunities for MEI to work with schools and MATs to improve the teaching of Primary Mathematics.
- Monitor and measure the progress of MEI’s activities and report on achievements and impact to agreed formats and timescales.
- Meet, liaise and communicate with other MEI staff in the development and management of MEI’s planning and its work.
- Liaise with associates and stakeholders involved in MEI’s work, so that they understand the services offered by MEI and can promote them effectively to schools and colleges.
- Maintain awareness and knowledge of current developments in education policy and programmes, and research and practice relevant to your role.
- Meet MEI’s requirements for safeguarding, quality management, health and safety, other legal requirements and environmental policies.
Person Specification
Essential
- Qualified Teacher Status
- 3+ years of direct experience of teaching the National Curriculum in Mathematics at KS1 and/or KS2
- An education expert with deep subject knowledge and experience of implementing pedagogical best practice in subject and phase
- Experience of providing professional development in mathematics to primary teachers
- Practical understanding of the NCETM’s Teaching for Mastery approach (e.g. a trained Primary Mastery Specialist), and the Ambition Institute’s Learning Curriculum Principles
- Experience of creating and delivering lesson content that demonstrates pedagogical best practice and excellent subject knowledge
- A high standard of English in verbal and written communication.
- Engaging communicator with excellent presentation skills
- Competent in working with, and adapting to, a variety of technologies
- A high level of self-motivation
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to work well as part of a team
- Willingness to travel around the country on a regular basis with nights away from home
Desirable
- Maths subject lead in a primary setting

- developing/contributing to a scheme of work at KS1 and/or KS2
- developing services/programmes to meet the needs the primary sector
- developing mathematics teaching and learning resources
- using software in the development of teaching/learning resources, such as quiz authoring tools, shared working environments, and mathematics software such as Desmos, GeoGebra or similar.
