Are you interested in joining our caring profession team, providing support to staff and care to the patients? The role of the Maternity care assistant (MCA) is diverse, challenging and interesting. We are looking for a highly motivated, hardworking MCA to provide support to the Maternity Team within Frimley Park NHS Foundation Trust at Frimley Park Hospital.
A significant part of this role includes cleaning patient areas including beds, floors and surrounding areas, making beds and restocking the ward areas. There are many other aspects to this role including monitoring women’s and baby observations. You will also be involved supporting women with feeding their babies after training provided through the infant feeding team.

Although previous experience within the NHS is desirable, consideration will be given to those who show a willingness to learn and who display an empathetic approach when dealing with people.
As an integral member of the ward to provide support to midwifery and medical staff in the direct provision and support of patient care.
To provide a range of non-midwifery duties ensuring an efficient service to the ward and community at all times.
KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
To ensure that all patients, visitors and staff are treated in a courteous, professional and caring manner and receive prompt assistance when required.
To promote equality for all individuals by taking into consideration their cultural and religious beliefs, customs and values. To adhere to hospital policy in relation to patient confidentiality at all times.
To be aware of their responsibilities under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act. Care should be taken in all aspects of work to ensure that these and other safety
regulations, e.g. C.O.S.H.H. and Manual Handling Policy are adhered to.
To report any accidents and/or incidents occurring to patients, visitors, staff or oneself according to hospital policy.
To report any suspicious circumstances/individuals/packages immediately to Unit Manager or her deputy.
To be aware of procedures to be followed and be able to support staff and family members, in the case of Fire, Cardiac Arrest, Obstetric neonatal emergency and any other emergencies.
To be able to prioritise and manage your workload to create a safe and efficient working system
To adhere to hospital policy and not become involved in any financial matters with or on behalf of a patient or relative, e.g. witnessing a Will.
As an important member of the team, the post holder should attend and participate in any meetings and training sessions as required.
To be aware of own levels of competence and at no time attempt tasks above and beyond their ability or training.
To enable patients to maintain their personal hygiene and appearance by: -
- Assisting those patients requiring help with bathing, dressing, bed making etc.
- Enabling/facilitating patients to meet their own hygiene needs.
- Assist with the movement of patients, for which instruction has been given, taking into consideration patient comfort and safety.
- To use equipment, for which instruction has been given, to mobilise/move patients.
- To encourage and assist the patient in mobilisation
- Assisting in menu selection, liaising with Midwives regarding special diets and being sensitive to cultural requirements.
- Helping patients who are experiencing difficulty to eat and drink.
- Serving patients meals and beverages and removing all dirty utensils from patients’ rooms.
- Adult MEOWS scoring and MET scoring where indicated.
- Adult blood transfusion observations.
- Adult haemocue Hb measurements.
- Adult blood glucose measurements.
- Neonatal blood glucose and bilirubin monitoring
- Neonatal observations to include colour, tone, temperature, apex and respiration rate.
- Support of a woman in labour in hospital and at home, including, helping to create a suitable birthing environment, maintaining adequate nutrition and hydration and supporting resuscitation.
- Helping to facilitate parent education opportunities.
- Encouraging and providing advice on Health Promotions issues, including smoking cessation, dietary advice and newborn care.
- Recording of ECGs.
- Performing GTT testing for pregnant women.
- Encouraging healthy maintenance of wounds and recognising deviations from normal.
- Report any deviations from the normal to the midwife.
- Ensure complete documentation of care undertaken which should be signed by a midwife.
- Offering support with breastfeeding.
- To be involved in the teaching of basic hygiene requirements to the mother with regards to the care of the new born infant (baby bathing, nappy changing, top & tailing)
- Following breast feeding training be able to assist and advise a mother with breast feeding
- Teach a mother the correct way to bottle feed an infant, demonstrate a show feed to all bottle feeding mothers, and how to sterilise feeding equipment.
- Document all care given and report any deviations from normal to the midwife.
- Provide immediate care of the newborn in recovery following elective LSCS
- Keeping the Midwife informed of all changes in a patient’s/baby’s condition.
- Ensuring that all relevant paperwork is ready prior to patient admission.
- Check that all admissions and transfers are registered on the hospital computer.
- Answering ward telephone and taking down/delivering messages accurately.
- Assisting staff with discharge procedures.
- Act as ward clerk when the need arises.
- Prepare maternity information packs in the community.
- Ensuring the tidiness of rooms and bed areas.
- Stripping, cleaning and making beds after patients discharge.
- Cleaning locker, chair, table and cleaning and changing ear muffs and checking bed head equipment
- Dealing with the disposal of soiled linen and refuse as per hospital policy.
- Following hospital policies for infection control.
- Monitoring and checking all ward equipment and ensuring that the appropriate requisition for works and repair are completed and that the midwife in charge is informed.
- Assist with the ordering of supplies, maintaining appropriate stock levels.
- Ensure and monitor efficient storage of ward supplies.
Any other duties required by the Unit Manager commensurate with the grade.
IiP
- To communicate on a regular basis with staff regarding the Trust’s objectives, plans and business developments.
- To train and develop members of staff
- To set objectives for staff and to appraise staff at least once annually.
- To discuss expected outcomes of training and development activity with staff prior to attending training events.
- To discuss outcomes with staff after attending training and development activity and to assist staff to transfer, develop and use new skills acquired.
