An exciting opportunity has become available for friendly, efficient and motivated people to join our team on the Delivery Suite and the ante/ post natal ward as a Maternity Care Assistant We are seeking a team player who is able to work under pressure and prioritise their own workload, whilst responding to the needs of the department. The successful applicants must demonstrate good interpersonal skills. Experience in a health care setting is preferable. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the Maternity Health Care Assistant role within the Maternity Unit and will be expected to work as part of a rota including weekends and public holidays To work as a team member with the support and supervision of qualified members of midwifery/nursing staff, providing care for patients in a safe and friendly environment within the Maternity Unit. To carry out fundamental nursing procedures as are delegated by trained members of nursing and midwifery staff, which have been taught, subsequently supervised and in which the Nursing Auxiliary has proved him or herself competent. 2. To act as chaperone when required, maintaining privacy and dignity at all times. 3. To act as runner in Maternity Unit Operating Theatre. 4. To undertake essential ward housekeeping tasks ( including cleaning and restocking of supplies) in parallel with the domestic ward staff in order to maintain a pleasant and safe environment including some cleaning and stocking of clinical areas. 5. To support safe delivery of care across the maternity unit by working flexibly providing care where required including supporting the team in the White Horse Birth Centre. 6. To answer the telephone and take messages in accordance with Trust Communication Policy. To take messages when necessary and refer to the midwife for advice is required 7. To assist in the preparation of rooms for women attending for antenatal, labor or postnatal care. 8. To assist women with personal hygiene requirements 9. To assist with the patients ‘meals as directed by members of midwifery staff. 10. To assist in the provision of beverages and light refreshments for patients and relatives as instructed by midwifery/nursing staff. 11. To assist and advise mothers with infant feeding and care of the new-born in accordance with agreed guidelines on Infant Feeding Policy ( Baby Friendly Initiative) 12. To assist in escorting patients to other departments. 13. To document, where appropriate any care provided and maintain accurate records. 14. To report promptly any concerns relating to mother or baby to a midwife. 15. To communicate effectively with mothers, families and all members of multi-disciplinary team. 16. To assist the midwife to prepare and carry out antenatal/postnatal support groups. This includes: preparing the room, helping with refreshments, equipment and generally being available to help. 17. To assist and support parents in the skills relating to parenthood. 18. To attend a UNICEF breastfeeding course to enable the provision of breastfeeding support to clients in accordance with the UNICEF guidelines. 19. To assist the parents with the care of their baby demonstrating nappy changing and bath bathing where appropriate. 20. This role does have a significant patient client care component. Post holder is expected to deal with patients/clients in a polite and helpful manner, ensuring confidentiality, should the need arise. 21. Once trained and competent the post holder will be expected to orientate and support induction of newly appointed nursing auxiliary staff including members of the nursing bank. The post holder will be expected to record records of care provided in the patients electronic and paper records once relevant training has been provided and competence gained.
