Materials Engineer

Materials Engineer Bristol, England

Atkins
Full Time Bristol, England 10.56 - 12.04 GBP Today
Job description

Are you a Materials Engineer, with a background in either manufacturing, design, or corrosion, who thrives on difficult problems? Are you drawn to complex design projects and excited by the opportunity to rapidly move on to leadership positions, heading up projects and guiding junior engineers?

If so, you might enjoy solving the energy industry’s most important materials challenges across a variety of clients. You could be assessing the materials degradation risks and improving the lifetime of nuclear power plants, you could be developing new applications, methods and testing procedures for mitigating corrosion in fusion reactors, you could be collaboratively working with designers and manufacturers to solve problems in fabrication and implement solutions. You’re likely to be juggling several projects simultaneously, so adaptability is a must! The constant in this role is the complex nature of the jobs and the chance to provide innovative solutions to a range of problems for several appreciative clients in the nuclear energy sector (fusion and fission). There will also be opportunities to undertake work within our wider energy portfolio of conventional power, offshore wind, and Net Zero initiatives, and to provide expert technical advice to colleagues and clients in other sectors across Atkins.

Whichever energy-related projects you find yourself assigned to, you’ll be helping to ensure the safe and reliable operation of current and future generation infrastructure – so you’ll be making an important and rewarding contribution to the security of our future energy supply.

If you want to know what it is really like working in our dynamic and exciting team, please feel free to get in touch with some of your future peers:

If you are a self-starter who can deliver multiple projects at the same time, working closely with clients and internal teams to capture requirements, set up projects, and deliver right-first-time solutions for the most challenging problems in the energy industry, then we’d love you to apply.

Role requirements:

You will work within small to medium sized multidisciplinary teams. To benefit from the collective experience of the team, our clients, and drive innovative thinking, you’ll work in a collaborative and supportive office / site environment for a minimum of half of your working week. You may also be based at client offices or plant sites. You will bring a level of commercial awareness to working within those teams to effectively deliver tasks for multiple workstreams and to deliver to time, quality, and cost.

Essential criteria -

  • A degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy or other relevant disciplines (or equivalent work-based experience).
  • Demonstrable work experience in solving materials, manufacturing and corrosion challenges in the nuclear, conventional power or offshore industries.
  • Demonstrable work experience in writing accurate, detailed, and concise technical reports relevant to the role (e.g., materials selection report, fabrication specification, inspection and quality plans, corrosion / ageing management strategy).
  • Comfortable with engaging with existing and prospective clients, working at their sites, and investing time in understanding their issues, goals, and processes.

Please flag if you have experience in any of the following (but still apply if you might enjoy gaining that experience too):

  • Design for manufacturing using established models, design codes, procedures and databases.
  • Materials performance and ageing mechanisms in nuclear power plants.
  • Coolant chemistry and mitigation of oxidation / corrosion in reactor coolants.
  • Working with design and construction codes such as ASME, RCC-M, or harmonised EN standards.
  • Working, or authoring bids, within a safety critical and heavily regulated environment.
  • Or if you are chartered with a relevant professional institute (or approaching application for registration).
