We’re looking for a bright and energetic person who is passionate about conservation of the marine environment and using their scientific skills to support data capture and report writing. We are looking for someone with a scientific and highly organised approach to data collection and analysis.

The Marine Research Assistant will be a key part of the North Sea Advocacy Project, assisting with the provision of data/evidence to support wider conservation advocacy work. The post holder will work alongside the Marine Advocacy Manager and will carry out a number of data gathering exercises and analyses to better understand the marine ecology and use of the Yorkshire marine and coastal area.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, dynamic and progressive team with time evenly split between office-based tasks and the field. A range of survey tasks will be carried out throughout the contract period which may range from intertidal walk-over surveys through to inshore vessel surveys in Marine Protected Areas. The post holder will be required to walk relatively long distances and at times on uneven surfaces, and will require the use of PPE (life jacket, waders, etc) so a good level of fitness is essential. The tidal regime will influence the time of day and week that survey work can be completed and therefore this role requires flexibility and excellent time management skills. As you will often be working in public areas, you’ll need to be able to diplomatically interact with people in a positive and proactive manner.

The role will require working from a number of YWT office locations including at Flamborough Head, Spurn National Nature Reserve, the Trusts head office in York and remote field locations so the ability to travel as required will be key. There will a relatively even split between time spent in the office and time spent in the field, with concentrated periods of effort in either environment at key times.
