Job description
The Presidio Trust is seeking a Park Maintenance Supervisor who will support the Infrastructure Stewardship. Once an Army Base, the Presidio of San Francisco is now a new kind of national park. The 1,500-acre Presidio is richly layered in history, is a natural oasis for wildlife, plants, and people, and offers iconic views known around the world. In its third decade as a park, public awareness and enjoyment of this exceptional place continues grow.
This is a full-time position with benefits and a starting pay range of $108,397 to $119,237. The starting base salary is dependent on the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Applications received by June 27, 2023, will receive first consideration.
Supervises and coordinates the work of crews engaged in the maintenance of outdoor areas of the Presidio, including Tunnel Tops, Battery Bluffs, park wide trash/recycle collection of public receptacles, signage support, picnic areas, roadways, pathways, paved and unpaved trail surfaces. Working with the Utilities Manager determines crew capacity and ability to coordinate work throughout the division.
Works collaboratively with other supervisors to ensure successful completion of preventative and unplanned work. Operates within assigned budget goals. Obtains quotes and purchases as needed to support assigned group within established guidelines.
Supports all designed initiatives involving worker safety and sustainability. Ensures compliance with all Trust and departmental policies and procedures. Monitors and participates in professional development, training, and management programs.
Responsibilities
· Plans, organizes, supervises, and evaluates the work of several crews of workers engaged in maintenance and repair of Presidio park areas, grounds and outdoor facilities including but not limited to landscapes, roads, and other projects; repair/production/installation of park wide signage, supporting road and trail maintenance, including street cleaning and waste pick up and recycling.
· Organizes, assigns, and directs work in maintenance and repair of playgrounds, park furnishings, equipment, and other related facilities.
· Evaluate gaps in capacity and recommend outsourcing opportunities to balance workload and expertise of staff. Perform Project Management and Construction Management duties overseeing contracts where certain workloads of the group are outsourced to contractors.
· Trains, evaluates, and disciplines subordinate employees; analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists employees in solving work problems; interprets agency polices to workers and enforces safety procedures and regulations.
· Maintains work records including but not limited to work schedules, work tracking reports, purchasing reports, work orders, safety and pesticide use reports, training records and employee evaluations.
· Evaluates material and equipment requirements for crews; submits requisitions for additional supplies; requests approval to purchase equipment; monitors the use of materials and supplies to maintain inventory.
· Responds and coordinates work requests with residents and other Departments; participates in review of construction plans; prepares cost estimates for repairs or improvements to landscapes and signage.
· Answers questions from the public and staff; investigates complaints and plans and directs corrective action and refers major problems and issues to the Utilities Manager for review.
Supervisory Responsibilities
· Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; authorizing time off; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
· Directly supervises five (5) employees.
· Assigns work and ensures all safety standards are following and applied, flow of traffic interruption is kept to a minimum, and unnecessary damage to equipment and tools is prevented.
· Checks overall work to ensure it meets goals and objectives.
· Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Required Qualifications
· Training or experience which provides the required level of knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete the position’s responsibilities.
· Must have 3 years of verifiable leadership skills.
· Demonstrate the ability to manage multi-skilled technical groups and multiple completing demands for supplies, resources, and time.
· Ability to identify and describe needs for personnel, material and other resources required for meeting established operating objectives and standards of the Department.
· Knowledge of basic principles and practices of organizing, assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of others; and hiring, evaluating, and disciplining subordinate employees.
· Knowledge of sign design, production, and installation, working knowledge of roads and trails work practices, such as buying materials to be used and process of application, keeping erosion to a minimum and eliminating hazardous conditions.
· Knowledge of tools, equipment, methods, practices, and processes used in park maintenance and construction.
· Knowledge of materials used in sign production and road and trails maintenance, and how weather conditions affect the work process.
· Ability to use a variety of equipment and power tools.
· Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, subordinates, volunteers, and other Trust employees.
· Ability to read and interpret construction plans/blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and instructions provided in written or diagram form.
· Knowledge of mathematics and routine record keeping, and ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
· Ability to work safely and provide good customer service.
· Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and use a computer for communicating and entering or retrieving data.
· Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees

Driver’s License Investigation & Review
This position requires a current, valid Driver’s License prior to starting work, and maintenance of a driver’s license throughout occupancy of the position. You will be subject to a driver’s license investigation as a New Entrant, and annual driver’s license reviews thereafter. An individual’s granting of an investigation and resulting reports thereafter is voluntary, however, employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a driver’s license investigation. The Trust may refuse to hire an individual, rescind an offer of employment, or review and terminate the employment of a current employee who does not successfully complete the driver’s license investigation.
