The Post/Candidate:
The modern apprentice training programme is based on a 4 year training contract.

Post holders will be required to complete either long-term or block placements with the training provider.

The Modern Apprentice will be joining the SNBTS Pharmaceutical Technicians maintenance team which is committed to supplying the highest level of support to all SNBTS Directorates. This team carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), unplanned maintenance (e.g. system failure), and project work in support of the activities of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS). All works are controlled to ensure that all SNBTS critical equipment is validated, maintained, and calibrated within defined intervals. SNBTS operates within a regulated environment.

We are looking to employ an Apprentice who is keen to progress in the world of engineering and who has a real passion and desire to understand the workings of electronics and related processes. The successful candidate must have a flexible, enthusiastic attitude with good team working ability. The ability to follow instruction and self-motivation is also a pre-requisite.

Over a period of 4 years, the Apprenticeship will be a mix of you attending college and working in an electrical/electronic workshop gaining hands on experience. You will be in full-time attendance at college for Year 1 of your Apprenticeship, with day release attendance at college for Year 2 with the remainder of the time workplace based HNC. Option for years 3 & 4 will include the HND. This will be a mix of college and time spent on-the-job learning, developing knowledge and skills.

As your skills develop you will be involved with designing, constructing, modifying, maintaining and repairing a wide range of equipment.

Under instruction from the Maintenance manager, the successful candidates will receive on-the-job training in the workplace to learn the following:-

  • Work and train alongside an SNBTS technician to ensure equipment is maintained within defined intervals following a standard procedure. Carry out problem solving activities and root cause analysis.
  • Learn calibration requirements and operate a range of calibration equipment.
  • Use Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages to design circuit boards and circuit diagrams.
  • Learn about Environmental monitoring systems (EMS).
  • Develop manual skills – maintain and repairing medical equipment.
  • Learn to work with a standard range of medical equipment
  • Develop best practices including good manufacturing practice (GMP).
  • With guidance, participate in straightforward project work.

All tasks will be at a level appropriate to the apprentice’s developing skills and under the guidance of the technical team. The role is to attend the apprentice training programme
