Job Summary
Join a dynamic, service-oriented team and gain valuable library reference and instruction experience. Scholars Commons Reference Assistants support the research and learning needs of IU students, faculty, staff, and visitors as they access and use the resources of the IU Libraries. Scholars' Commons Reference Assistants work with librarians and library staff to provide reference services at the IU Libraries primary reference desk in the Scholars Commons (Wells Library, East Tower).
- Reference/Research Assistance: Answer research-related and directional questions in-person, via chat, or over the phone, provide referrals, and assist with the use of print and electronic library resources.
- Occasional special projects may include activities such as providing library tours, drop-in workshops, and other student-focused or course-related instructional services both in-person and via social media, blogging, online research guides, assisting with assessment projects, etc.
- Required training sessions throughout the fall and spring semesters will cover reference desk policies and procedures, as well as information about various library collections and services.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Currently enrolled as an IU Bloomington graduate student
SKILLS
Required
- Current enrollment in ILS Z501 User Services in Tools or previous completion of the course
- Demonstrates ability to interact courteously and effectively with a diverse population
- Demonstrates ability in a team environment Ability to work independently, asking questions as necessary
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Flexibility, creativity, attention to detail
- Willingness and ability to learn about new resources, databases, and services
- Ability to maintain knowledge of and follow library policies and procedures
Preferred
- Previous experience in customer service positions (retail, food service, tech support, non-profit, libraries, etc.)
- Knowledge of academic library resources and experience using IUB Libraries electronic resources
- Demonstrates leadership ability
Working Conditions / Demands
This position requires sitting or standing at desk and viewing computer screen for extended periods of time.
Additional Information
Available to attend orientation Friday, August 18, 1pm-4pm
Available to attend training 4-5pm every other Thursday
Projected graduation date of Spring 2024 or later
