We are seeking a legally qualified individual with private client / private wealth experience to provide advice and counsel to HSBC’s Trust and Fiduciary Services (TFS) business in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man (CIIOM). This role will be based in Jersey.
Role purpose
- Working with Senior Legal Counsel for TFS and the wider Group Legal Team for HSBC CIIOM to support TFS with a broad range of legal issues. These will include complex or high risk client matters, assisting with larger governance projects and ad-hoc legal support for TFS.
- You will be acting as a trusted adviser to the TFS business, by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic, practical and strategic legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner whilst working towards becoming a subject expert in the TFS business.
- Assisting in the identification and oversight of actual and potential legal risks in the TFS CI business and appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
- Provide support and guidance to the rest of the CIIOM Legal Team as required.
- Maintaining and drafting policies and procedures for the TFS to ensure the mitigation of business risk.
- Evaluating and responding to changes in legal and regulatory requirements as they arise. To horizon scan for potential emerging legal risks ensuring appropriate action by the TFS CI business.
- Managing legal spend, coordinating the timely payment of invoices and liaising with external service providers.
Required Knowledge & Qualifications
- Legally qualified with 0 - 4 years PQE or an individual with wider paralegal experience.
- Knowledge and experience of non-contentious trusts law is essential.
- International trust and trustee experience, as well as contentious trust experience is desirable although not essential. A willingness to learn and interest in these areas is essential.
- Although support will be given, a self-starter with the ability to learn quickly about the HSBC Group corporate structures, its business and personnel and develop a clear understanding of HSBC’s corporate culture.
- Strong ability to deal with a number of internal and external stakeholders and to prioritise a demanding workload in terms of legal risk and commercial consideration.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to generate clear and concise written and oral reports to management at a variety of levels.
- Lateral thinking/problem solving and the ability to understand a range of complex issues and the impact of those issues from a legal, financial and reputational perspective to reach a solution.
- Ability to keep up-to-date with key legal and regulatory developments impacting the TFS CI business and to advise the business accordingly to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Willingness to act as a delegate for the TFS CIIOM Senior Legal Counsel at certain times, including standing in at management meetings, and supervising legal matters.
