The City of Abbotsford’s Legal Services division is seeking a self-motivated professional to join their dynamic team as a Legal Assistant.

In this role, you will provide legal assistance to in-house legal counsel and other City staff with daily business and long-term planning, and will work on a broad range of issues that impact the municipality. Responsibilities include: overseeing the intake and response to liability claims (e.g., drafting decision letters to claimants); contract and matter management; invoice processing; drafting, filing, and serving court materials (e.g., judgments); preparing, reviewing, and distributing contracts and other legal documents; processing land title registrations and statutory declarations; and obtaining and reviewing corporate, insurance, and other records. You will also provide support within the Legal Services division by managing deadlines, triaging requests for legal support, and gathering and organizing documents. You will regularly communicate with other City staff in order to respond to liability claims and to comply with document demands and other requests for information. You will also routinely communicate with external parties including outside counsel, insurance adjusters, claimants, and the general public.

Your organization, prioritization, and time management skills will make you an asset to the team. This is an ideal role for a civically-minded legal assistant who would like to work on exciting, satisfying, and unique projects across a range of different practice areas in an established legal department with excellent internal and external support.

Qualifications Required:
Completion of a one-year Legal Assistant certificate or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution;

Three years of experience processing legal documentation, preferably in a municipal setting;

Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence; and

Experience with BC Registries and Online Services, myLTSA, and Court Services Online would be considered an asset.

This position is unionized, CUPE Local 774, and the hourly rate of pay is from $33.94 to $39.93.

At the City of Abbotsford we work strongly to create a challenging yet rewarding environment for our employees to thrive. We offer ongoing personal and professional development opportunities, competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including membership in British Columbia’s Municipal Pension Plan (a defined benefit pension).

The City of Abbotsford is committed to creating a workplace that fosters a culture of diversity and inclusion by attracting, retaining and developing a talented and diverse workforce which broadly reflects the community and citizens we serve.
